What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

I will have to check both albums out. I have not heard much about either. Very easy on the eyes I must say. Thanks for the heads up ROTF.

Hi Matt
You can hear some sample tracks from Basia Bulat on her MySpace area: here. She is described as Folk / Melodramatic Popular Song and More fun than your very own pony! - she's from London, Ontario. I think it is a superb album.
Tara is from Ireland and it is more towards pop music with folk leanings - excellent production and enough to lift her songs away from the crowd. Yet again Tara has a MySpace area: here - go for Paperback Cliche.
If I may I would also recommend Kate Walsh - from almost unknown she was top of iTunes download chart in the UK for a short while - and her albums are excellent. And of course, she has a MySpace area: here.
MySpace costs me a fortune - why is the world full of such great music: it wasn't always that way, I remember the 80s (Mary Chapin Carpenter excepted, of course - The Calling is her best record since Come On Come On IMHO and where did I first hear that?)

The newly re-mastered fourth/fifth album by the superb Nirvana. It is a bit different from the early stuff like Simon Simopath and All of Us, but worth a listen. If you are thinking of buying Nirvana albums I'd get The Story of Simon Simopath, All of Us and To Markos III first - in that order.
Some of this album is excellent and some bits sound like Ray Davies on an off day, but that's Patrick Campbell Lyons for you.

That'll be the other (our) Nirvana then eh?

Just borrowed this from my brother:
Super-loose jazz-funk from the ear;y 70s. The vocals sound terrible at first but you get used to them.
Still not sure whether it's utter rubbish or the greatest CD ever.

I am a huge fan of Gary Bartz! His version of I've Known Rivers is one of my favorite cuts.
I am listening to:

This is an amazing CD. I don't know why McLaughlin was displeased with it, but it really showcases these guys talents.

Hi Howard
Yes the real Nirvana - not that noisy lot. I noticed the other day that iTunes labelled them as Nirvana UK, which is certainly not the bands name.
I've written to Apple pointing out that Patrick Campbell-Lyons and Alex Spyropoulos formed Nirvana in 1966 an released The Story of Simon Simopath in 1967. They are the original Nirvana.
I now know that Nirvana (Pat and Alex) had filed a lawsuit in California against Grunge Nirvana, but settled out of court on terms that let both bands use the Nirvana name and release new records without packaging disclaimers or caveats to distinguish one Nirvana from the other.
Nirvana (Pat and Alex) released Orange And Blue in 1996: out-takes plus a cover version of a song by somebody called Kurt Cobain (who?). It was a flower-power version of Lithium originally recorded according to the sleeve notes by Grunge Nirvana.
I also requested iTunes labels the Beatles as Beatles (Liverpool band) because I'm thinking of starting a group and calling them: The Beatles - mine will be a Trash Metal group - my first album was to be entitled Am I bothered - retitled from the working title of never mind as I didn't want to confuse anybody.

BTW - the newly issued Nirvana album is really Patrick Campbell Lyons solo effort from 74 with some Nirvana tracks tagged on the end. The final track is the most compelling listen on the collection. As I said earlier I consider well worth a listen, but not essential. The Story of Simon Simopath is the essential Nirvana album.

Compulsory this morning after somehow dreaming about 'Little Wing' last night - the opening track which I haven't heard in years and years. Odd thing my brain.

Thanks ROTF re:Nirvana info.
You never cease to amaze. I thought I held onto a load of trivia/knowledge but you got me beat.
I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt as your responses don't seem to be rehashed Googles and is first hand information.
Keep it up.
Perhaps you could sign up for the next Rock/Folk/Prog family tree type book.
