What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Excellent Clannad album there Howard.

Meanwhile I'm still wondering how a song like This Shirt didn't get on this lady's essential collection - obviously the compilers brain had a day off - still you don't need a single album called Essential MCC, title's nonsense - nearly all MCC records are essential

Thanks for the link - goose-bump inducing even via the laptop speakers. Who says you need a hifi.

Anyhow clearly I've been mistaken in my previous impression the MCC was too 'country' for my tastes. So where should I begin with MCC albums to get more stuff like 'The Shirt'?

Thanks

Ian

Now enjoying the very beautiful 'Reverence' from Richard Bona Smile

Hi Ian

Of herself Mary once said Lots of times people ask me, 'Are you still a country artist?' I have to tell them I don't know the answer.

This Shirt is one of Mary's stand-out tracks - she is an artist with folk roots that has a definite leaning towards a country sound - this is most evident on Come On Come On, which is one of my favourite albums, but you may find it veers too much towards country - it's quite rocky in places especially He Thinks He'll Keep Her (click here) - which reached #1 in the US charts. I Feel Lucky (click here) with its honky-tonk piano and the beautiful guitar work on Passionate Kisses (click here - sorry about the dreadful video clip, please just listen to Mary's song). The title track is an absolute gem too - much slower and more haunting (can't find a clip)

However, I'm apprehensive about recommending it as it may be too country. So perhaps Stones In he Roads would be a good place to start. There's a version of the title track sung by Joan Baez on the tube (here) - it's quite a commercial album, but none the worse for it.

However, I'm going to recommend The Calling - my only reservation is that they may have recorded the CD too loud, but the songs shine through. Mary's web site has some extracts.

I'm very biased in my views when it comes to MCC - This Shirt was the first song I ever heard by her and I saw a great documentary about her on The South Bank Show - ever since I've collected her records and even ventured out to see her live in Oxford.

HTH.

Thanks for that ROTF, I'll check it out and try a few.

Now onto

Symph. nr.5 - sometimes neglected I feel because of the over-familiarity of the opening but full of pathos and drive in equal measure. Hard not to sing along to - so that must be a good sign!
