What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Robyn Hitchcock - Luxor
Denis, I have quite a few of his but don't know that one. What's it like? I'm more of an Egyptians sort of Hitchcock fan than solo but he's never dull...
Gary,
I was introduced to Robyn after watching a BBC4 profile back in April (see the "Robyn Hitchcock (BBC4 Fri 27th April)" thread). I was kindly sent "Luxor" by ChrisG who is a big fan and had a spare copy. Today was my first chance of playing the CD and only reached track 6, the instrumental "Luxor". I like Robyn's oblique story telling who to my ears combines Syd Barrett's whimsy and John Lennon's caustic directness. In the BBC4 thread you will see other RH recommendations which in time I will follow up when they are released.
Can I also point you to my recommendation of The Dears via Nic Harcourt's wonderful "Morning Becomes Eclectic" in the same thread. One of the best bands I’ve heard out of Canada and are excellent “live”.

Rasher - If you like minimalist ambient like Stars of the Lid, it's well worth giving Eliane Radigue a try. She's a French composer who constructs drones from layer upon layer of analogue synth tracks - the results can be quite extraordinary, and occasionally disorientating, as your ears grapple with odd harmonics that seem to come at them from all directions. Trilogie de la Mort (see my last post on this thread) is 3 x CD, each an hour long, so we're talking hardcore ambience here!

Got it - at last - it's superb.
Why did I ever wonder if it would be anything less than magic.
If only ..... still great music lives forever.

Dear Ian,
That recording of the Second contains the mostly lovely performance. Barbirolli was a genius at Sibelius!
ATB from Fredrik
PS: Methinks a Sibelius streak might be coming on as the last few weeks seem to have beem all Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn plus some Mendelsohnn!

I know you know that 'cos you recommended this set to me - and a very good recommentation it was - thanks again.
At the Festival this year it will be played by the Bavarian Radio Symph. Orch. under Mariss Jansons, so we'll see what I and my troupe of Finnish vistors make of it from up in the Gods.
