What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

I'm watching High Fidelity on the telly. I'm looking at us.

Hi Rasher:

Ewemon,
I don't recall if I have heard any recordings, I know he is yet another Portland area resident I haven't taken the opportunity to see live. I need to correct that soon and I will note your disc recommend for a future purchase.
Thanks

Looks good ROTF, have you tried Karajan's Finlandia?
Steve
Hi Steve
Yes, I have a vinyl box set I bought years ago (DG 2740 255). It's got Symphonies 4-7, Violin Concerto, Finlandia, Valse Triste, Tapiola and The Swan of Tuonela. Christian Ferras is the violinist. I used to play it a lot, but haven't given it a spin for a while. I think I should.

Well, I have my CD's in alphabetical order and I'm now considering doing it another way.
Me too:

Better than Mr Manson, but that's just my opinion.
Have you heard any of the rest of the cycle - the disc of the 3rd and 7th symphonies is one of my all time favourite Sibelius recordings.
I rather enjoy the Karajan set of 4-7 that you mention (the tapiola is particularly fine - there's post on it in my Sibelius thread).
Actually, I've got a fair bit of Sibelius coming up during the festival - Jarvi is coming on Saturday (possibly to do the 5th, but I can't remember), Ades is doing the 3rd and Jansons the second.
regards, Tam

Dear Tam
I'll re-read your posts in the Sibelius thread. I always find your posts informative and interesting. I haven't heard the rest of the cycle, but I will search it out.
I have the Sir Colin Davis No 2, but got the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra disc from the library when returning the Miles Davis discs I'd borrowed. You see I don't need them any more having bought Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain and In A Silent Way and finding it has now clicked and I really enjoy them.
There is so much music out there to enjoy.
Many thanks, Rotf
