What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

I don't know why I didn't discover this in 1968 when first released. My copy arrived today, excellent. Seems to be quite rare on vinyl these days.

Hello munch,

beatdownrecords via e-bay.

I don't think I have the best copy available as mine doesn't appear to be remastered. Rev-Ola
label, 15 tracks - 2005.

ROTF will know that one.
I only have 14 tracks on the CD though.
ROTF told me that the original only sold about 600 copies. So you might have a re-issue or one of the 600.

The original vinyl copy of Sallies Fforth was recorded in 1967 (released in 1968) - it is on Parlophone PMC 7050 (Mono) and PCS 7050 (Stereo) and it has 13 tracks on it. Jonathan Dunsterville was the inspiration behind the group and its songs and made enough from the royalties to buy his family a meal out (his words in RC). The tracks were

She's Alright
I'm So Happy
Montgolfier
Drive My Car
Goodbye
Hey You
Sun Sing
Sun and Sand
Labour Exchange
They'm
No
Sighing Game
Come or Go

As far as I'm aware it has never been officially re-issued on vinyl. Though there is rumoured to be an Italian bootleg version available.

The original Parlophone is worth about £200 (mint condition) in the collectors market.

Shortly after the album, Rainbow Ffolly recorded a single with a new song Go Girl as the A-side and Drive My Car from Sallies Fforth as the flip side - it was mono only: Parlophone R 5701 and now worth around £50.

The only other recording by Rainbow Ffolly that I know of are the tapes they did for Wycombe Hospital Broadcasting Association - these have never been released and I've not heard them, but the tracks are What A Wonderful Ward (based on a song by Louis Armstrong), Lucy In The Sky and I Can't Let Maggie Go.

The band were also going to release Love Goes Where My Rosemary Goes and become stars, but EMI refused to let them record it. So Tony Macaulay did the recording himself as Edison Lighthouse and the rest, as they say, is history.

I (and munch) have the 14 track version from the See For Miles CD (SEECD 493), which was done from the original master tapes and has Go Girl as the bonus track. The Rev-Ola simply has the mono version of Drive My Car on it as an extra bonus track, hence the 15. However, as far as I know Rev-Ola did not have access to the original master tapes and used the original vinyl as its source.

That's a life!
My good friend's listening room has a window on the porch and summer evenings are so sweet listening to some records stayin' outside with a glass of good wine.
The bad side is that it lasts only few weeks a year!

Dear stefan,

Is this a DG release? MJ Pires is one of my favourite pianists in Mozart and Bach!

Stefan,

One of my favorite discs of her. Do you have her Mozart Sonatas on the Denon label, or is it something more recent?

Regards,

Haim
