What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Don't know if this will help, but think Mountain Goats, Bright Eyes and Five For Fighting. Although they have "band" names, essentially acoustic singer/songwriters in a bent-pop sort of way, popular with the American college crowd. Some of it is very very good.

What film did you see, Stefan?

Looks like interesting music, Haim. How is it ?

(Movie was the French "Ensemble c´est tout", which was a tender story of 4 lonely people finding their ways - together)

Stefan,

It is three Sonatas for solo violin by Tartini, separated by two works by the contemporary American composer Donald Crockett.
Despite the 250 years of difference of composition time, the pieces work well together and the violin playing of Michelle Makarski is on the mark.

When Tower Records stores were having their final sale, I bought three copies of the disc to be given as presents. They were going for $4 each.

Regards,

Haim

Jeff,

I stumbled upon this playing sequence last year on 2 hour drive starting at Midnight.

1. Played Echoes from Meddle
2. Played On An Island complete

This is the reverse sequence to the Royal Albert Hall concerts last year. I felt that the spirits raised by Echoes really helped the reletivly weaker On An Island. Even so, DG's guitar playing is as good as it ever was and he has received glowing praise from a Jon Carin interview here

Hi Denis,

Don't have Meddle, not a big Floyd fan, only "group' album I have is Division Bell. Have Gilmour's acoustic concert on DVD and On An Island along with a solo Gilmour from twenty odd years ago on Columbia. I don't think OAI is a particularly strong album either but it has its moments when I am in the right mood. I know I will enjoy the interview.

best regards

not a big SCI fan, but they certainly had their place in the US jam band scene and a huge following.

Jeff,

If you fancy capturing Echoes and OAI on DVD then try these previews of Remember That Night.
Looks like were not distant reletives then, as my Parents are/were Londoners and never ventured abroad. Our only Dutch in the family is after a few beers that brings Courage to the fore Big Grin

Is that by choice, Jeff, or becuse of all the rain falling in Portland?

I find that books and music taste much better after an outdoors activity.

Trio Sonatas by Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach.
