What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Dear Friends,

I was wrong, and I have just really enjoyed the Sinfinia Concertante for Violin and Viola of Mozart, but not in my usual choice of Grumieaux and partner (can never remember who), but Sammons and Tertis. The recording runs on to The Meditation from Thais, which has just ended. So a good session may indeed now follow. Sammons was a lovely fiddle player.

PS: Huw, I got my Lps of the 48 from Oxfam, and they were and still are in splendid condition. As old as me and still as new, unlike their proud owner!

Is this the best live album ever?

It was my proper introduction to the heads and this fuller veriosn is really a gem

Not considered as good as vol 1 but I find a selection of tracks 234789,10,13,14,15 gives an impressive album

Sloop,

By strange coincidence I have listened to volumes 1 & 2 tonight which I picked up second hand on vinyl about 15 years ago in Liverpool.

I'm a bit of a Kenny fan and have 30 or 40 of his albums/cd's. Saw him at the Blue Note in New York a few years ago when he was doing a largely Ellington set. Bloody excellent. Also and got to meet him after the first set and get photo autographs etc. Top bloke.

The other band on the bill that night was the Ron Carter Trio. Who he has not played with, is not worth knowing.

OTTT Tin Tin Deo by Kenny, a US import and another second hand vinyl purchase.

Regards

Nic

Tam,

What a great CD - I keep returning to it. Rattle is really fascinaqting at times - and the Berliner philharmoniker fun to listen to (I'd never thought I'd say that!).

Earwicker, what do you think of them? I have 3 and 4 too, and will obviously collect them all as they come out. I'm not 'grabbed' by any of them yet [c10 plays] so they are on the shelf waiting for a future try at getting to love them

I find them a rewarding listen - especially the first. I lived in Orkney for a few years and love the place so I have more empathy than other listeners, who may not quite see the point.

It's high quality music, but you have to make the effort for it.

Claude,

Actually, this is the first time I've had the disc out since I bought it last summer (mainly because lately I've been clearing a backlog of unlistened to cds). However, it's a fantastic disc (one of Rattle's best in my view) and I suspect I shall be dusting it down much more often.

KUBB

CD called Mother. Jolly good it is too. Only on the micro at work at moment but bet it sounds rather smart on proper kit at home.

Just played Arctic Monkeys LP on vinyl. Very good. Play it loud and it gets better still. Reckon it will be a big fave through the year.

Anthem of the Sun is an amazing Grateful Dead album back from 1968 - I don't think there is any other record I've got that is quite like this - it's a tapestry of sound with short songs interwoven. Absolutely superb.

Escapin' through the lily fields
I came across an empty space
It trembled and exploded
Left a bus stop in its place
The bus came by and I got on
That's when it all began
There was cowboy Neal
At the wheel
Of a bus to never-ever land
