What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Doomsday Afternoon, by American prog/folk/art band Phideaux. Phideaux xavier makes albums with his friends, influenced by Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, early Genesis, Camel etc.

If you like long-form proggy, melodic music, you may like this a lot. See www.bloodfish.com

Casino Royale (2006) - David Arnold - it gets better with each listen. Not in the class of the John Barry ~ 007 scores but still pretty good, nonetheless.

You won't regret this- excellent job done by MOFI.

Not a great voice but another excellent accoustic played in the vein of Rollie Tussing III, Kelly Joe Phelps and Ry Cooder.

All his discs are worth getting.

I feel the same way. Yes it is very good in places, but far from consistent. There seems to be some throw away pop songs in amongst the more crafted stuff. The lyrical themes are quite repetitive at times. At her best the album sounds like Dusty Springfield meets Sandie Shaw dragged in to the 21st century. She's a good singer that's for sure. I'd say it was a promising debut album, but I think she is capable of something really stunning if she has the ambition.

The track that stands out is Why Should I Settle For You?.
