What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

I actually thought to myself that the cd was cut at a higher than normal level while I was listening last night. You probably do not have a duff cd.

Afraid so. The recording is a bit "car friendly" for my taste too. I have the US copy ROTF, so it looks like it's not your disc.
Are all her discs recorded that way?

Thanks for the info - let's hope this is not a trend for Mary's future releases - she's too good for that. Well at least I know the UK and US copies share the same car friendly attribute. Bob Ludwig was responsible for the mastering - so I'm not sure why this has happened, it's not the first MCC album he's mastered and it's not apparent on Between Here And Gone for instance.
Steve - it is first MCC disc I've had a problem with and I've got most of them. So if you you're thinking of buying some others then please do not be put off.
Perhaps there is a vinyl copy of The Calling that I can track down.
Many thanks, Rotf

Thanks ROTF, I think the album's great. It is a pity that the levels are up so much.
Sounded worse after some superbly recorded Julia Fordham CDs.
Cheers,
Steve

Mary Chapin Carpenter-The Calling
Hi Matt
I have this album and think it is one of her best, but I think the CD seems as if it were cut at too higher volume. Everything seems loud - I'm sure there should be more dynamics.
I don't find this with any of MCC's other CDs, which are are beautifully engineered. This is the same whether I play The Calling on my Naim rig or on AV system (Linn CMS) - so it does seem a characteristic of the particular CD I have.
Have you found this? Perhaps I just have a CD from a duff batch and it is worth changing it.
Many thanks, Rotf

I love her work but this disc gives me earache. Yep it is mastered louder. I could probably do an EAC peak levels rip and find that it is almsot 100% which gives it that upper and lower distortion.

I like the cover and the music - haven't played it for a few days so must put that right - probably my favourite new album of this year so far.
