What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

This is the most recent Tangerine Dream album I have (I've most of the LPs up until Hyperboria) - has anybody listen to their recent output and can give some recommendations. Thanks Rotf.

Some ultra keen workmen with heavy hammers, a taste for a local radio station and a circular saw are giving it some scuddy biff a few yards away. Some building work is taking place on our floor and Bob the Builder and his mates seem to have a compelling need to make a serious racket. As for the inane whistling...
Right now I would like to hear myself think!

Hélène Grimaud - Reflection. Not sure, a captivating disc but you can't help but feel there is a "look at me" rather than a "enjoy the music" element to Grimaud's playing

2 days ago I put on the Beatles' Sgt Peppers and White album to listen to my new 300 amps. WOW, amazing performance in both aspects. Now I"m listening to Bartok's String Quartets due to this overload of Mozart birthday celebration. Needed some astringent to get the sweetness out of the ears.

I have never really got along with that one. My favourite is 'You, Me, Us?', which contains my favourite RT song - 'Woods of Darney'.

Oh really? I was quite looking forward to hearing it, the boys at Gramophone seemed impressed!

The playing is excellent, but given the theme of love that is the emotion which seems a little lacking. Also, the piano sound is very dominant. Still, there is no denying her virtuosity.

Bill Frisell's new one East/West. A 2 disc set, one live at Yoshi's and the other at the Village Vanguard.
It's taking a while to get into it, but man does it stretch my system.
Rick.

By contrast now listening to Laughing Academy by Punishment Of Luxury.
A local north east band band who won great critical acclaim for this 1979 debut but not enough sales.

Charles Lloyd - The water is wide
During my stay in Big Sur last week, I was under the impression that Charles Lloyd was still living in the area, and I did some "asking around" - just to learn that he had moved to Sanata Barbara in the mid 80s (talked to the guy whose best friend had bought the house from CL) Still, this whole area is full of (musical) creativity, and "The Water Is Wide" tells the story. In a way...
cheers
