What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Dear Nic and Haim,

If you are going "back" then there is no more refined and sublimated music than that of Bach or Handel - in the original style!

It is impossible to overestimate the imapct of this music in all its variagated sfor sheer romantic impact of emotion if certainly not style! That is sublimated! But once you get used to the nuancing it is as free, and more expressive than any music since! Loud does not equate to truly meant, and slow does not equate to sublime or profound!

Moderate equates, however, to humane, and humanly understood!

Two days in a row I have listened to the Water Music and the Six Brandenburgs, and I do wonder if any greater public music exists! Handel defined public music with the Fireworks Music, and nothing finer in the line, as "propoganda" music has been conceived since, but Bach's public utterances are unequalled in the depth of private resonance!

Feeling serious, after some big and possitive thoughts. Much to do and now is the time for action!

ATB from George

I know what you mean, George, though personally I always hesitated to rank any music, not only because it is a personal choice but because that choice (at least with me) would vary with moods, state of mind or even times of day.

Lately I have been taking great pleasures from listening to chamber music of Telemann, Boccherini and CPE Bach. Small stuff like trio sonatas, quartets and quintets, music played with ease and finess which manages to touch and stay with you for a long time.

I do not have all the six Brandenburg Concertos performed by one particular group. Any version that you could recommend to me?

Regards,
Haim

Likewise, from thread revisiting my Steely Dan back catalogue (amazed Gaucho would ever be considered weakest album by the way, it's when they grew-up to my ears - Third World Man a big favourite of mine).

Currently, listening/watching the Pixies Live at Newport dvd borrowed from a friend. Great stuff.

iPod on ride into work is Ojos de Brujo, who seems to shift lots of discs in Spain, but little anywhere else.

Hi Kuma - How does that sound? As good as the LP12? - Thanks, Rotf

ROTF,

This deck did not disappoint. Sounds fabulous via the Akiva.
Funny, the only thing I can read on this deck is from your posts on this board. Smile
It sounds like a sober version of the Sondek.
