What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Earlier:

Bach Concertos for Keyboard and Strings in D Minor, A, and F Minor, played by MJ Pires with the Chamber Orchestra of the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon conducted by Michel Corboz. Great music making by any standards on Erato, and then Beethoven's Violin Concerto played by Menuhin in Lucerne in 1947 on Testamant. Grand performance in a respectable old 78 recording well tramsfered on Testament.

Lastly various Concertos Grossi, Opus Six, by Handel. Busch Chamber Orchstra with soloists Adolf Busch, Ernest Drucker [violins], and Hermann Busch [cello]. The best of the lot! 1947 US Columbia records reasonably recorded and transfered on Pearl, but the performances are so full of warm humanity and expressive significance, without a hint of false romanticism. Amazingly for the time there is a proper continuo with Mieczyslaw Horszowski playing a suitable small harpsichord, and a string compliment of 17 in the tutti band.

Fourtet - Everything ecstatic. Great for clearing the cobwebs from my system and checking whether it needs any attention.

As well you should. He played a small club in Saranac Lake a couple of weeks ago. The place only held about 70 people. Talk about intimate concerts.
