What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Denis, is it any good? I'm waiting for the limited edition vinyl edition of Fear of a Blank Planet which has this on one side.
Probably have to wait for my birthday though as Mrs S caught me ordering it and she will almost certainly get to the postman first.[/QUOTE] Same here Seagull

The 3 parts of this Concerto Oboe d'amore are all superb!
It follows the two previous Concertos on the '4th' CD in this set.
Part 1... what does, "without tempo indication" actually mean?
I like to think that Reichenberg was allowed to do his own thing without any help from a conductor? (but i dunno).
Part 2... Larghetto - heavenly.
Part 3... Allegro ma non tanto, this is the shortest passage on the CD and it's only the shame for that.
To my mind, this oboe is emulating the human voice and comes across with sympathetic feel.
An excellent reproduction quality and musical form that i wouldn't dare to criticize on account of my limited knowledge of classical music... This music is still absorbing into the depths of my brain with a mind to make itself at home. (It's already the best of friends with my audio system and it's clearly growing on me too). I don't believe Bach composed this to grab peoples attention but rather to soothe and... embrace the soul.
kind regards to you George : )

"...embrace the soul." That is it! Exactly what I find Bach's music does. Sometimes with joy, and sometimes with sadness, but always uplifting...
ATB from George
All that "without tempo indication" means is that Bach thought the speed was so obvious in the music that no guidance is needed! How times change. Every nuance of expression is nowadays marked. Bach leaves his markings to just the occasional loud or soft, and rare dagger accents! Sometimes he marks bowing for the strings but not always...

Well, aside from the Rugby, today's listening has been as follows: Vernon Handley conducting Robert Simpson's 10th symphony, Kondrashin conducting Shostakovich's 4th (a really impressive performance) and the second disc of this excellent box set of George Szell's Mozart recordings with the Cleveland Orchestra (some lovely recordings, beautifully packaged).
I've also been catching up with the last concert from Radio 3's Sibelius broadcasts last week (see other thread for more details) and enjoying some of Osmo Vanska's Beethoven symphony cycle from Minnesota thanks to a free offer from emusic.
regards, Tam

Thank you for this interesting post Poul, I did not know he was deceased.
His death is very tragic for 36 years of age, (1950 - 1987). What did he die of?
kind regards ~
