What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

A nice Sunday spin.
Everybody raves about Bill's albums with LaFaro and Johnson, but Gomez is phenomenal here, understated but so tasty - my personal favorite Evans album I have heard.

When I sold my record collection back in the 80's (yea, I know), I copied this (Must Believe) to cassette. The cassette was wonderful on a Nak Dragon for many years and before I sold the Nak, I transferred the cassette to CD-r. Still sounds terrific - its the music !
"Simple Matter Of Conviction" is another terrific BE album with Gomez, this time with Shelly Manne on drums.

Good post, Jeff !
This is the Music Room and I really like comments like Georges or yours that talk about the music and not "how it sounds".
cheers

Hi Stefan
Hope you are well. And thanks for the nice comment.
George (and you, and Gian, Tam, Ryan, JWM and so many others) astound me with your understanding and technical knowledge of music. I know what I like and have listened my whole life, but I rarely "understand" what somebody is doing or why. I can sometimes make feeble attempts at trying to relate to others what I hear, that I like. More often than not I read somewhere what somebody likes about something I like and why, and then can say to myself, "Yea, thats what I like too, just didn't know how to say it."
I love the Music room, many thanks to Naim for providing this area.

We're not very far apart with our musical "reception". Just as much as I like putting "music" in front of "technics", I don't consider listening to music (live or at home) as an intellectual exercise. Much more an emotional one. At times, it helps to "understand" what it's all about, but if it doesn't touch my heart and soul, it's not for me.

Mahler's 2nd Symphony from this quite good box set..
Very well sounding too, just a little bit on the bright side.

Courtesy of another forum member - excellent concert footage of Jeff Buckley, Peter Gabriel and Caravan (one after the other, not all together).
And have also found time to play my favourite new release of this year so far

I can never remember this ladies name and people rarely post it, usually just the cover photo. Once again, please, for me, the artist name and album name ?
thanks

Agreed - excellent album. In a similar vein, and also on ECM, the Christian Wallumrod Ensemble are worth checking out. I have their "The Zoo is Far" CD:

It's not exactly an inviting experience at first, but there's something intriguing about it that draws you in, and keeps you coming back.

Thanks. I seem to have forgotton how to do it. Yes I now see what was wrong. It does appear there are many ways to post these covers.
How is your system sounding. Those Kudos speakers look great.

Jim,
Thanks for asking! The answer is : GREAT!! In fact it's sounding better than ever - all after the great switch back on after a thunderstorm precautionary switch off!! (For audiophiles on a smaller budget, this olive gear really is a bargain!) All I can hear is music, the system just melts away.

Doomsday Afternoon by Phideaux. Phideaux Xavier is an American lover of a certain brand of progressive rock influenced by Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and early Genesis. You can find him and his band by searching his name or his label Bloodfish Records.
The latest album Doomsday Afternoon has created a few ripples in the prog world - a lovely 66 minutes' worth of long-form music with strong melodies, sublime female vocals in parts (Valerie Gracious), recurring themes and traditional seventies sounds (e.g. mellotron, Moog). The lyrics are about ecological disaster.
If you are into symphonic prog, but like the pschedelic sounds of Floyd, try this!
