What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Just dug this out ..my original vinyl copy's of their original albums were pressed in Spain on cheap thin vinyl and sounded horribly compressed ...so this cd does sound better..

..but where's the excellent 53 Miles West of Venus?

Earlier I listened to this months Word Magazine sampler. An intriguing track was "Intruder" by Susanna Karolina Wallumrød. A review of the Album Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos is here. There are samples of 3 tracks at the bottom of the review, see what you think. On hearing "Intruder" I got the vibe of Sara & Rebecka.

I can never remember this ladies name and people rarely post it, usually just the cover photo. Once again, please, for me, the artist name and album name ?

thanks

Hi Jeff

It is

and the album is called Oh My Darling - excerpts are here.

Tracks are:
Before I Knew
I Was A Daughter
Little Waltz
December
Snakes And Ladders
Oh, My Darling
Little One
Why Can't It Be Mine
The Pilgriming Vine
La-Da-Da
Birds Of Paradise
A Secret

If your going to get Basia's album then go for the Canadian version that is coming out this week, as it has an extra track. Either way, it's a fantastic album.

Nathalie Merchant - Tigerlilly

All soft except her voice, which vreates the right balance to make this album a classic. 8/10 sonics 8/10 performance.

Sir Arthur Bliss (1891-1975)
A colour Symphony * Things to Come * Adam Zero * Cello Concerto * Discourse for Orchestra

I've been loaned this 2 CD compilation by a colleague friend... didn't think I'd like it at first glance but thought to give it a try : >

Digitally remastered to perfection (imho) by John Hadden in 2005 @ EMI Records Ltd., this really allows the music to come though to excite the listener. Much of this music is incidental but is none the worse for it. One needs to be in the mood for a raised volume level but this is a very enjoyable listerning experience. So much of it is loud, brash and brassy, not my usual diet of listerning - but there's nothing wrong with diversity...
"Things to Come" - Music from the film - first screened in 1936, but here on CD disc 1 in eight short parts recorded @ Abbey Rd, London 1976, Royal philharmonic Orchestra/Sir Charles Groves, it stands up so well and no film is needed to align ones imagination. Total playing time for both discs is 2hours 34minutes. Will need to replay this double CD a few times to gain better familiarity with the multitude of good performers, and have more fun : )

My favourite part (so far) is...

~<>~Cello Concerto~<>~
13. Allegro deciso
14. Larghetto
15. Allegro
Arto Noras ~<>~ Cello Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra ~<>~ Paavo Berglund
(Guildhall, Southampton, 14 & 15 June 1976)
