What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

I was recently given the Fellner, and I have to say I found it a little difficult to get one with. There was something bizarre about the recording - in terms of the tone of it. Cloudy is probably the best way to describe it, but to be honest it's just downright odd (and unlike anything I've ever heard) to these ears, in such a way that it is actually rather difficult for me to come to any kind of judgement about the merit, or lack, of the performance.

Thanks Tam, for the comment, very much appreciated. Must be the usual ECM "ambient" recording that distubs ?

Interesting - I'm not sure if I have any other ECM discs in my collection (I'll have to hunt through when I have a moment).

As I understand it, "ECM ambient" = close mikeing, very spacious, reverberant/resonant acoustics. Works very well for some jazz, not sure I'd like Bach's WTC served up that way.
I'm listening to Corelli, Concerti Grossi (Naxos recording) right now - a highly enjoyable disc.

That's a better description than mine - I had wondered if the closeness of the micing had something to do with it.

More intimate - recorded at her home and then mixed elsewhere. There is less band, not so much Slow Motion, but somehow it still pulls you in. I have paid money for worse, but I am not sure if it is a significant step forward from the other albums. Nevertheless, I like it but only time will tell whether it gets more plays than the other albums.

Absolutely superb record by the wild woman of traditional folk. Did you know she couldn't stand hearing her own records and that's why she stopped recording? Personally, I cherish every recording she made.

' a downbeat toffee delight. Thick "bas-chocolate" with an aero light centre of fine cream melodic samples. '

worth having, Mark ?
I love so much her "Maria" album (and a couple of others, like the "opera prohibita"...)
cheers

Yes I think so, especially for less than 10 euros. Not going to compare with other CDs, but she has a beautiful voice (full of emotion) together with accompanying piano. Well recorded as well FWIW.
I also have opera prohibita, mozart arias and salieri album.
Regarding the Fellner, I think Tam sums things up fairly well. For the price I would think twice, but I still enjoy the CDs. I thought the overdamped room effect was just my ears

Best Regards
