What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

~<>~ SERGEY PROKOFIEV (1891-1953) ~<>~

Symphony no.1 "Classical"
Symphony no.5

~<>~ Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra ~<>~

Conductor ~<>~ Stephen Gunzenhauser

Recorded at the Reduta Concert Hall in Bratislava in February 1989

[DDD] NAXOS Playing Time 61'11"

I always find Prokofiev's orchestrated works very stimulating and easy to understand. This is a typical example of good music to d.i.y. to, stripping wallpaper, putting up the shelves or, as i am engaged at present, putting up a curtain pole. The Slovak Philharmonic plays with a sense of purpose, from delicate to menacing, and the string section can do 'menacing' very well indeed ~ sent a shiver down my spine while i perched on the step-ladder, a tape measure in one hand and a pencil in other i can only succeed at my task now.
Perhaps it's the heavy industrial tone, but it's also beautiful and never fails to give me a creative impulse for motivation and get out of the armchair to get some work done, Oh yes! : )

I'm foreseeing the end of my posting, here. In fact, if I try to think of a reason why I do this nothing good comes to mind (except for posing and other selfish reasons). Just looking at the posts of the last 24 hours, I start understanding that I'm not in the right peer group.

Stefan

Stefan, everytime someone posts something I haven't heard of. I go and listen to it on Amazon or some other site. This posing or selfishness as you call it provides an invaluable service to members on this forum, new and old. Without it we can't expand our own musical horizons and I can't thank you and them enough for doing so.

Ms Nymph,

Are you in the UK? Surely music and DIY at 07:15 would not go down too well with the neighbours. Big Grin

Working from home again.

Stuck on 'G' at the moment

More prog filed under 'G'. This features the Crumhorn, an instrument that never caught on in rock circles.

It's funny most of my late 70's/early 80's stuff seems to be filed under 'C': Cure; Cocteau Twins; Chameleons; Costello; Cope; Clash...

but I've also got some Prog filed under 'C'!

Radiohead - In Rainbows

On the PC as it's MP3 only and I've got a CD5 so that's not an option

On first listen it's quite good - I MAY consider the box set now.

I wasn't too keen on Kid A, Amnesiac and never bought Hail to the Thief.

I think this is going to be a bit of a slow burner for me. I am enjoying quite a lot of it. But other bits sound a bit 'Roger Whittaker'.

If i can't judge posing (if there's any in your posts) i can't understand the other selfish reasons.
Sorry to say.
