What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Improvised drums and electronics, hits the spot and unwinds the mind. With a mashed up version of Greensleeves.

Gian,

I was always familiar with the dance version of Theme For Great Cities called The Real Life by A Corporation Of One. Never really knowing it was actually a Simple Minds tune until someone played it to me a few years later, thus I searched out this album and found a great New Wave album. Must get some more Simple Minds I feel.

Cassadaga: Bright Eyes

Bought this due to the 9/10 rating in HiFi+.

My verdict? Well, it has elements of The Beatles in the use of string backing, Floyd with the use of random conversations, and the vocals sound a bit like Dylan. I've listened to it a few times and like it more each time - but I think for me it'll be a 6/10. If I'd been able to borrow it I suspect I wouldn't have bought it.

Note to self: Reviews by PD in HiFi+, his musical taste is different to mine.

Fantastic MFSL vinyl pressing that I broke the bank to buy in about 1982. The tunes are still fresh as a daisy today.

For those who might have some doubts about REM being the greatest band in the world, this will rapidly dispel them!

Two CDs (HDCD, although it doesn't say on the box) & DVD which I watched, awestruck, last night.

Absolutely magnificent!

Thanks for the heads up Tony.
I saw it on tv yesterday along with the new Clapton album.

Never really took to them. Bought Automatic, the two before that and the one with Frequency on it but ended up giving them away as I never played them.

Aaaaah Simple Minds, a much maligned band in my estimation. They weren't always the uninspired bombastic stadium rock band they've been portrayed as.

Inspired by recent postings I've just played Sister Feelings Call, one of their best (produced by old tea cosy hat himself - Steve Hillage!).

Currently playing Real to Real Cacophany. I'd forgotten how good this album is.

My personal favourite Minds album is New Gold Dream, which may be next on the LP12...

Reminds me of the time when I was in hall at Uni. I was in my final year and I was in my room playing the just released single 'Promised You A Miracle'. In bounced one of the annoying trendy freshers (first year student), He said how much he liked the Minds so I pointed to my record collection on the shelf and asked him which of their four or five albums he liked best. He replied that he had only heard the single and retreated with his tail between his legs.

Also saw them at Guilfest a couple of years ago. They played a 'best of' set which really did get the audience going.

I grew up with th emusic of Simple Minds....New gold Dream and Sparkle in the Rain have some amazing tunes. The only really poor record was the overtly commercial One Upon a Time. A great band in their time and still great live.

Atmospheric modern Jazz, reminds me of The Cocteau Twins.

Sounds OK to me. I still have not had a "serious" listen. Background only, saying that it hasn't shouted "terrible sound" to me.

The first album I ever bought, complete with scratch on the second track, probably made while trying to scratch and cut Smile . I'll probably be buried with it.

I've got that on cassette somewhere - haven't played it for years, but I rememember liking it. It is the one with Take A Walk Around Times Square and Blue Millionaire on it, isn't it? The title track is excellent - I preferred to Broken English.
