What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Hello Gianluigi,

I recently bought this album on vinyl. The sound quality is terrible, no dynamic range and messy. If you have the CD I hope it's much better.

George.

Hi George!
The original printing came out in 1977.
In 2004 Sony made a remastered version including "Little girl" as bonus track.
I don't know who produced the copy you have but the 2004 cd sounds good.
Cheers!

Jeff,

How is this disc?
I have a Kenny Barron with Charlie Haden (Night and the City) which is excellent.

French piano for a fresh morning.

Stefan,

It is between Tharaud and Hewitt. You have to have one of their Rameaus.

Hi Haim,

It is very good, I bought it because I am a big Kenny Barron fan, and had no Getz in my collection.

From 1980-1995 I listened almost exclusively to jazz. There was a terrific band called Sphere (ie: Thelonius Sphere Monk) with Charlie Rouse, who played originally with TM, on sax, Kenny Barron on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Ben Riley on drums. The Getz "anniversary" disc is very much this style.

I was fortunate in 1997 to sit in the front row of a small show by Kenny Barron (saw his piano workshop the day before at a local community college) with Ben Riley on drums and Ray Drummond on bass. Last I knew Kennty Barron was the jazz program master at Rutgers University and still playing occasional gigs. After Bill Evans, my favorite jazz stylist on piano - so tasteful.

Thanks Jeff.

If you are a Barron fan don't miss his duo with Charlie Haden.

Do you have this album?

It is titled 'Sphere' with Kenny Barron, Gary Bartz (sax), Ben Riley (drums) and Buster Williams (bass) on the Verve label.

Kristin Asbjørnsen - Wayfaring Stranger, a spiritual songbook. Can't make my mind up about this one, but it does seem to get played a lot at the moment

I will try to check out the KB/CH disc.

I don't have any Sphere now unfortunately, what I did have was on vinyl and that be gone. When last I tried to find them on cd, they were not available. Gary Bratz probably replaced Charlie Rouse when he died.

I don't listen to my jazz much any more, but since getting some new-to-me Sonus Faber Concertino speakers I have dug a little deeper into the collection.

Take care,

Jeff A
