What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

"A Little Night Music" by Mozart. Philharmonia and Otto Klemperer. Deft as ever with Mozart, Klemperer manages the trick of making the music engagingly light of touch, and yet also brings the formal elements to the fore in a most classical style.
After a cup of tea will follow the Thirty-ninth in E Flat and The Jupiter. Same forces and in my view not yet equalled on records since, which is quite alarming as we are talking of forty-five year old performances. So much for the benefits of HIP in Mozart at least, but at least there has been a continuous tradition of performance of this music since the time of composition, and perhaps Klemperer was the last true link to that now completely lost tradition.
ATB from George

My copy is the US version, CD only. Only seen Thomas once, on Keyboards with Bowie @ Earls Court many moons ago.

munch re: An Ancient Muse.
I love it. She covers all sorts of traditional music and incorporates it in a Celtic feel. Canadas Enya I have seen written. Just, but with an extra "something". Loreena plays harp which is always haunting and she has a beautiful voice. IMO

Spooky solo piano, as it's nearly Halloween. Track 12, "Spell" is astonishingly eerie.

On Cisco reissue.
The bset sounding reissue ever. Highly recommend it. ( way better than the original ABC or MOFI releases )
Wish all the records come in this standard.

Thanks!
I gotta get those!
I am finding out that not all reissues are good. A several Verve I purchased recently turned out not as good as the original.

At any rate, Cisco folks seem to know what they are doing.

A great album - the best British release I've heard this year.

Hi ROTF,
I have just read a few reviews of this album and it certainly sounds like something I would enjoy. I'll have to give it a go! Do you also have 'Cruel Sister'?

Kuma,
Amen to that - are there any decent CD versions? I have the "Show Biz Kids" collection which is better than most Dan CDs that I've tried.

Regards
Nic
"Kate hits the road again in November throughout the UK when she opens for Josh Ritter on his UK Tour. Dates are:
16th November Nottingham Rescue Rooms
17th November Gateshead Sage
18th November Manchester Academy
19th November Glasgow Grand
21st November Birmingham Glee
22nd November London Shepherds Bush Empire
