What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

when we bought our house in 1989, we found our neighbor across the street was a well-known-in- Portland big band jazz player/music director of the Woody Hite Big Band. Ray played saxophone his whole life and played the Crystal Ballroom (a Portland venue featured on the cover of a posting on this thread called Burnside on Burnside by RL Burnside !) in 1941 when it was one of Portland's most popular dance halls, and again at the same venue fifty years later in 1991 when the "old ballroom" was refurbished and opened as a Portland concert venue/restaurant/pub.
When Ray realized I loved jazz, and piano jazz in particular, he recommended I listen to John Bunch, a name totally new to me. JB was pianist/artistic director for Tony Bennett for a number of years and his style is swing. Had a wonderful quartet with Bucky Pizarelli named NY Swing, listen to their recordings if you find them. Anyway, playing this tonight for my friend Ray, who passed in 2001 in his eighties, not much older than JB was when this disc was recorded. Good listenin'

It's on the black stuff from days of yore - some really songs on it that still sound good.
Currently listening to Radio Five Live ... and enjoying it at the moment thanks to Alan Lee, but there's a long way to go.

Saw him at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival about ten years ago, the voice is even more impressive live.

That's a ltd edition disc which I think you can still get from Hip-O records. It is the two albums he put out for A&M in the mid 70's. He covers Long Train Runnin (Doobie Bros) I'm Not in Love (10cc) and Do It Again (Steely Dan). I have always liked the album but it isn't like his acoustic stuff this more pop in style. Another disc of his I have always liked is Cut to the Chase.
