What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Lou Rhodes
I have Beloved and Bloom and can thoroughly recommend both - Lou Rhodes is an excellent artist.
She has currently in the middle of a 'Borders' promo tour but have missed her up here.

I don't like this album as much as Car Wheels, but it is quite powerful and distinctive.

Bright Eyes - Cassadaga
Bought as it was well reviewed in HiFi+ ....by PD.
Album reminds me of:
Beatles - use of orchestral segways;
Pink Floyd - use of effects;
Dylan - lead singer can't.
The music & lyrics are fine, the fact that this guy can't sing stops me getting into this; a problem I frequently have with Dylan - the music & lyrics have to be outstanding to distract me.
Think this got a 9/10 by PD - 5/10 for me. I've listened to it three times, I don't expect that number to be increased.

Lord of the Rings Symphony - Silva Recordings
This is the outfit that use Eastern European orchestras to do soundtracks.
I have been waiting for Howard Shore to produce the Symphonic suite based on the three films but saw this in HMV on Saturday.
Now this is still NOT a straight-forward recording. The Orchestra where recorded on the continent, the flutes where recorded separately in the UK, as where the Choir & the soloists. The tracks where then mixed, but I really quiet like the result. The passages the have chosen cover two CDs in a selection that cuts out the repetition, and the brass and drums have real weight within a consistent acoustic.
I was pleasantly surprised & have listened to it four times already.

Sam's Town - Killers
I really enjoyed their first album but held off for No 2, waiting for the price to drop!
Now bought and listened to ....and I'm not sure whether it is in the same class - but I am enjoying it; although some of the lyric delivery keeps reminding me of The Cars.
This will be a regular listen for at least the next few weeks.

A Night in Paris - Diane Krall
Have to say that I am NOT a Krall fan. I keep trying her albums as there are always elements that attract me, but ultimately I give them to a friend who likes her stuff!
Well I bought this album for him as a thank you for taking my family with his on a tour of Georgian wineries ....but ended up keeping it. The album is live & has her playing a series of standards - brilliant!
I may own NO other albums by her but this will get a regular outing.
