What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

After listening to Fire Marengo on the BBC 4 Cambridge Folk Festival programme, I just had to play this marvellous record
Jon Boden - lead vocals , fiddle, tambourine
John Spiers - melodeon, anglo-concertina, backing vocals
Benji Kirkpatrick - guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, banjo, backing vocals
Andy Mellon - trumpet, flugelhorn, backing vocals
Justin Thurgur - trombone
Brendan Kelly - saxophone, bass clarinet, backing vocals
Gideon Juckes - sousaphone, tuba, backing vocals
Pete Flood - drums, glockenspiel, stomp-box, frying-pan, knives and forks, party blowers
Rachael McShane - cello, fiddle, vocal
Paul Sartin - fiddle, oboe, backing vocals, megaphone
Giles Lewin - fiddle, bagpipes, backing vocals
BTW does anybody know where I can get the Oxford Book of Disco Folk Music that Jon mentioned on the show?

Re: Raining Up:-
From her website:-
"Máiréad: "From my traditional background to playing with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra; from my work as a solo and a session musician with various artists from many musical genres to my time playing lead fiddle with the shows "Lord of the Dance" and "Feet of Flames", I've been lucky to have been exposed to many different musical styles. This, along with the sheer enjoyment of playing, provided my motivation to record this CD, "raining up" - a combination of traditional Irish, Scottish and newly composed Irish and contemporary tunes."
WEBSITE
It is an instrumental album. It is not an album I listen to often, but is quite relaxing and different to a lot of my " normal" listening.
If you like Celtic music this should fit in with that.

Hi Haim,
How do you like this one? I think Geri Allen is brilliant but sometimes too abstract for my taste.

Anthony
P.S. Just got this on vinyl...

Just sublime! I love Tina Turner's voice because she has the authority to sing Edith and the Kingpin

Hi Anthony,
It is an energetic and fast moving album. Geri Allen's piano is great sounding, fluid and straight forward.

This is the only other Geri Allen disc I have which is also very good (with Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Juan Lazaro Mendolas who plays the bamboo flute):

I have that one too. I guess I will devote some listening time to them this weekend. I have enjoyed her work with Haden and her husband, Walace Roney.

Skarlati Sonatas... arr for two accordions! The sustain is rather nice after the decay of the harpsichord, though it cannot have been what he had in mind! the articualtion is exactly glorious however! Drach and Klymenko perform...

Nigel Kennedy's latest offering - an odd sounding recording as it reminds me off the remasters from both Heifetz and Oistrakh. No denying the quality of the playing, just seems odd to hear a modern recording sound so old.

Great music, intimately recorded. The version of Goin' Down Slow is worth the admission money on it's own. Any Bibb fan has a gap in their collection without this.

Still just as enjoyable as the day I bought it some decades ago!
