What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Without their leader, Tomasz Stanko, still very good.
Absolutely agree, Haim !
After a horrible day in strike struck Paris (and Düsseldorf), finally smoothing my nerves with Gidon Kremer playing the Partitas and Sonatas. Man, music can cure...

Looks interesting Huw.
Did you order this directly from ECM ?
The vinyl is cheaper than the CDs, but I'm tempted to go with the CDs though. Is ECM vinyl good and worth going for ?
Regards
Mark
Can't talk about this specific record, but ECM vinyl is very, very good, in general. Above average !

Wow:
Just goes to show you shouldn't judge a CD by it's cover (which from this one seems rather dumbed down), but a little detective work reveals this is Carlo Maria Giulini's recording with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (and one or two fillers - which frankly the disc would have been just as fine, if not better, without) at an insanely low price. The disc completely blew me away spinning it for the first time just now, indeed, I'm tempted to go back for another listen.
regards, Tam

Mark, sorry I didn't see this before. ECM vinyl is very good and the sleeve imagery is a much greater part of the experience as well.
In addition, if you like contemporary chamber music you will not be disappointed. This gets fairly frequent airplay here, not quite the drama of Shostakovich or Ravel, say, but that should not speak against you buying this.
I think I bought this via ECM directly, but it could also have been in a local record shop.

You must have a big hole or large letter box in your door!

Stefan,
How do you usually travel to France, by train or plane?
A long story for the upcoming very long weekend:

Another very good digitally remastered album and as cheap as chips too. I always thought the Eagles sounded nice, light, easy listerning and perhaps a bit bland when heard on a small radio in the backgroud where i work... but in the comfort of my home this album is musically superb!
Very nice driving in the car music too : )

Are all Japanese CDs that much better? Some of the tracks seem better than the US Rhino versions. I thought they were pretty good, oh well.![]()

Having a peacefull relaxed morning with quiet music.
Lisening to the 2nd CD of 3 - still captures me. Beautiful recording of a range of restored and handmade instruments
