What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

I'm sorry! This again. I just can't resist Cassandra Wilson singing 'Fragile' - simply beautiful.

Geoff,

I tried to pick this up at the shops earlier. Someone got there before me I think.

You should also get the 2 Naxos CDs of music from John Dowland with lute played by Nigel North.

Mark,

Perhaps you can try this in the meantime:

A magnificent Byrd. Gustav Leonhardt plays here in a more meditative and slower pace than Elizabeth Farr.
One of my favorite harpsichord discs in terms of the music, the playing, as well as the sound.

Haim

Haim is it much of the same repertoire or different peices from the Farr set?

Geoff

Geoff,

I do not own My Ladye Nevells Booke. I just listened to it at a friend's house. The Leonhardt disc (only one) is a selection of Pavans, Galliards and Fantasias, and I am almost sure it contains different works. You can check it here:

Alpha has another very good Byrd disc with Bertrand Cuiller playing the harpsichord:

James Taylor (with Larry Goldings on keyboards)
"One Man Band"
cd/dvd

first listen, we've heard it all before, but it never gets old. basically JT live, acoustic, Larry's keyboards filling the spaces from the acoustic guitar.

The Creedence album sound as good as it ever did .... especially that really nice track Gloomy ... oh I see what you mean ... the Gyro.

The Gyro is a very good deck and I prefer it to my Rega P25. It did improve when I changed from the Ortfon Rondo Blue to the DV20XL too. That extra clarity came storming back. I think the DV P75 synergy may have come into play.

Is it better than a CDX2/555PS - I couldn't say, as haven't really compared the two ... but it has confirmed my feeling that a better record deck is a good investment.

Now listening to

My vinyl cover is different from this cover, but it is the same 1980 recording,

BTW The Seismic Sink does suit the Gyro.

What's the verdict Jeff? I've just ordered this from the US.

Are all Japanese CDs that much better? Some of the tracks seem better than the US Rhino versions. I thought they were pretty good, oh well.

Some are and some aren't Steve. Drop me an email Steve-- my add is in the Aretha Franklin music post and I will give you some advice to help you on your way. If you want name some of your favourite discs and I will let you know if I have heard the Japanese version and if I think it is better.

I like it, I have had it on at modest volume while reading the paper.

JT on acoustic, LG on various keyboards (drum machine on one) and a chorus vocal backing on at least one. Intimate, sounds like a smallish theatre. JT in good voice. Haven't watched the dvd yet.

I dabbled in JT over the years, never owned a lot, but a recent friend the last five years who is passionate has rekindled my interest, I own and love his live dvds "Pull Over" and "Live At The Beacon Theatre" and a live cd/dvd essentially "solo" seemed a natural purchase. The only studio albums I own are "Greatest Hits" and "October Road" though I have borrowed many from the library the past couple years.

Knowing y'all are fans, I think you will enjoy it. Plus, we fit the demographics Winker

Great stuff. The versions on "Hit" sound better and you get more, so you might like to try it.

But, you still need this copy because for some amazing reason - no "Mercy Street" Frown
