What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Jeff....thanks for that. Very interesting. I am a big fan of Gene's work with Ray Brown. His piano always sounded happy and boy could he play with gusto. The above CD (released in 2001) is of a concert he gave in 1981 at the Otter Crest Jazz Weekend before he joined the Ray Brown trio. It is excellent work with a just few but long tracks in which he streches out his improvisations.quote:Originally posted by Jeff Anderson:quote:Originally posted by Geoff P:

Otter Crest is on the Oregon coast !! Gene, last I knew, lived and taught in Boise, Idaho, several hundred miles east of Portland. Saw GH at the Oregon Jazz Society annual fest back in the 90's, what a classy man and musician. Small combo with a 7(? maybe 8?) string (electric) guitar player who was quite amazing. GH daughter is reputed to be quite the jazz vocalist.

Always loved this quote from the inside cover:
"And you, liar, teller of tall tales; you trample all the Lord's commandments underfoot, you murder, steal, commit adultery, and afterward break into tears, beat your breast, take down your guitar and turn the sin into a song. Shrewd devil, you know very well that God pardons singers no matter what they do, because he can simply die for a song..." Nikos Kaztantzakis, The Last Temptation of Christ

Ray LaMontagne
"Till The Sun Turns Black"
Well she lifts her skirt up to her knees,
Walks through the garden rows with her bare feet,
Laughing
I never learned to count my blessings,
I choose instead to dwell in my disasters.
Incredible imagery !!

A fine performance! Emotionally this is deeply despairing. It frequently changes tempo only to reflect varying shades of gloom and confusion : (
But dispite all this sadness and anxiety (which seems to fit perfectly with a cold and rainy Monday morning) there is a tendency for the mind to feel sympathetic to the theme... if one is in the right mood.
I'm really getting to like EB's music, do i need psychiatric help? : )
