What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Kites, by Jade Warrior; I'm on a crusade to get these guys, belatedly, a bigger audience.

Simon Nabatov playing "Herbie and Pierre" on "The Move" (with Nils Wogram). If he continues to play the piano like this, it (the piano) will see end-of-life, SOON. Fabulous !

Such brute, animalistic force ! Cecil Taylor, a free pianist ? Hah !!

cheers

"Ladies in Lavender" soundtrack, with Joshua Bell on violin. An OST which really stands on its own merits.

Live recording of a "Rheingau Musik-Festival" concert from last week where they played "classical" Piazzolla compositions. Nicely done. HR2.

Sviatoslav Richter playing Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, on a recording made in Vienna in 1962. Marvellous indeed!

Graham,

Out of interest are those with Szell? They played a rather good 4th with szell and richter during the beethoven week on radio 3.

Myself I've been listening to concertos 1-3 played by Aimard, Harnoncourt and the COE (a bargain at £10 in hmv for the complete set). Very enjoyable so far, indeed in danger of replacing brendel/rattle as my first choice for a digital recording.

It's a DGG recording made with Kurt Sanderling and the "other" Viennese band, the VSO. On a DG Original coupled with Mozart's 20th Concerto and a Beethoven Rondo.

I know of (but have never heard) an RCA First (with Leinsdorf?) and another Third with Muti/Philharmonia. I wasn't aware of anything that Richter did with Szell.

Graham,

You're quite right - I'm being stupid. I had Richter confused with Leon Fleisher (don't know why I'm always getting those two muddled up).

No problem. But speaking of Russian virtuoso pianists playing Beethoven's Third with Szell, do try to hear an Orfeo disc C 484 981 B. That has an all Beethoven concert with Szell conducting the VPO in Egmont Overture, Third Concerto with the inimitable Emil Gilels and the Fifth Symphony.

I've raved about this on a previous occasion here, so I'll say no more.

Graham,

I'll look out for that. You can't go far wrong with either Szell or Gilels (do you have the latter's brahms concertos with Jochum and the BPO).

Incidentally, have you listened to any of the Krauss ring yet?

Yes (to Gilels/Jochum) on CD and greatly prized old German pressed LPs.

No. (Blame the postman!)

J S Bach "Great Organ Works" Helmut Walcha
2 CDs. 1959/71(?) Deutsche Grammaphon Stereo 453 064-2

CD1 Great Organ of St Laurenskerk. Alkmaar

Depressing lack of real bass except occasional traffic rumble and action noises reminded me of old organ vinyl. Strangely jerky playing left me rather cold. Excellent sense of reverberant space though. I shall have to try listening to this CD again later. But it's determined, almost plodding performance is strange to my ears. Perhaps he is fighting with the organ?

CD2 Silberman Organ of Saint-Pierrre-le-Jeune, Strasbourg

Bass rather restrained until later pieces when it improves. Rather close acoustic without many spacial clues. Playing much more fluid and (rather oddly) seems to improve with time.(?) Superb music throughout with some truly wonderful pipe tones and colours. I'm finally beginning to really enjoy this! Smile
