What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

"When we trod this land, we walk for one reason ... to try to help another man think for himself. The music of our hearts is roots music, music which recalls history, because without the knowledge of your history, you cannot turn in your destiny: the music about the present, because if you are not conscious about the present, you're like a cabbage in this society."

Huwge,

I haven't played that one for many years, but I think it might go on in a minute. Good album.

Gets fairly frequent airplay here, but I think I need to find a new copy as this one is fairly played out. I think it was 1982 or 1983 when I bought it.

It was heavily promoted by John Peel when I was at university in the early 1980s.

The good old days! Never imagined it would be played on an LP12 back then.

Some Horace Andy and then to bed.

Haim...WOW 6 hours..that is some challenge. I have never heard anything by Feldman. Can you suggest something less daunting to try?

regards
Geoff

Hi Geoff, Haim, Morton Feldman is indeed the man. Triadic Memories is a nice solo piano work that clocks in at a mere hour or so:

If you're hard enough, try For Philip Guston, a 4-5 hour chamber piece for flute, piccolo, marimba, etc. I'm currently enjoying this version:

Feldman's definitely not for everyone, but if you develop a taste for his soundworld, it's quietly addictive.

Also is the extra tracks any good as it's a lot of money to buy this over here?

The sound is quality is very good. I would not say that it's earth shattering though. I have all of these on vinyl and the gold cd's. As for comparision I still believe the gold CD's are best sounding. The Bonus CD has some very good songs. I have a DVD-A player in the car and these are at the top for sound quality.

munch,

These are my high-school nostalgia albums. Smile
Something/Anything is a re-issue 180g virgin vinyl in cool blue records.
I remember I played it to death when I was younger.

Munch

Munch,

The last Todd's live concert we went to was a disaster!
It was so bad, we walked about in the middle of the gig. ( guess we were too old for this ) <sigh>

I used to follow his concert when i was in Japan. ( Utopia's RA Tour was great, indeed and I will never forget the "Last One Victory" and of course the 'Hello It's Me" encore. )

If you like early Talking Heads, Gang of Four, Franz Ferdinand, Television or choppy guitar licks you won't be disappointed here. Also elements of The jam, Postcard Records, Associates, Jilted John. Haven't had a good listen yet but seems rather good................................. heed welcome to The Young Knives

If you don't mind me asking voltaire how much did the sacd set cost you? I thought about it but baulked at the cost.

I would like to thank munch and Jeff for your kinds words. Hopefully I will be fit and raring to go soon.

Hi, I'm sure I paid about £180 on the day it was released but I note that amazon are now selling it for about £130...here

I love box sets and this one is superb-the cds are in replica lp sleeves which have now started to fray slightly on the spine where I've pulled them out of the case so many times...just like vinyl!

The sound quality as you would expect is stunning.

I wouldn't buy it if you already own all the albums but if you don't or you happen to own an sacd player then... Winker
