What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Geoff,
No, I never heard that one. It looks like a large ensemble. I wouldn't mind getting it since I have nothing of Art Pepper.
Another very good Pacific Jazz Records disc is Chey Baker's Quartet with Russ Freeman on piano.

Haim

Hi Haim
Agreed. I had it originally on vinyl on Bruce Lundvall's incredible Elektra Musician label - everything I heard on that label was terrific. I was very pleased when I learned on this forum a couple years ago that it had been released on cd.
Edition 2 - in sequence - Letter To Evan, 34 Skidoo, Laurie, and Nardis - it doesn't get much better than that.
best regards,
Jeff A

Hi Munch
I have had it since the early eighties ... on vinyl or cd. Saw this threesome at the Spokane Opera House when I lived in Spokane Washington from 1977-1979. I had seen the original Byrds back in December 1965 at the tender age of 16 - I was in heaven. Turn Turn Turn had just been released.
My favorite Byrd was Gene Clark and every few months I listen to my group of cd with him on it. I think he was their best songwriter and singer though McGuinn had the longer career. GC died way too young at 47 yoa. The M,C & H album was a commercial attempt to regroup several of these guys. It is rather simplistic and homogenized, doesn't generate a lot of exciting moments. But the Byrds sounds is still in there working its magic. Instrumentally very much a studio multitrack album. If you are Byrds fan, maybe. If not, probably worth skipping, but it helps bring back the memories for me from time to time - at my age memories cover a lot more ground than the future will
Take care
Jeff A
ps Hillman did some good stuff with the Desert Rose Band

Crosby was my least favorite, though the man has incredible pipes. (and I saw him in the original "pancho" in '65, got myself a fringed suede jacket after that and wore it all through college)

Lots of Gene Clark mp3 here:
www.geneclark.com/bootbox.html
very low-fi, but if you like GC and a little music history, lots of interesting stuff.

ps - this whole GC flashback came from the inclusion of two of his songs on the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss disc - they obviously respected his writing.
