What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Levin and Kashkashian, what a fantastic duo
Shame about the SL2 bleaching the harmonics

While we are at it. Nearly half price from Caiman compared to amazon.de and came with a big made in Germany sticker on it. Sounds great and this is where I will be ordering all my CDs from now on

Hi Ewen
I see you are enjoying the re-issue of "Argus". How does it sound? I have it on vinyl but not played in years. Is the new version worth buying on cd?
BTW just got a copy of Rickie Lee Jones (1st) on a "Target", sounds great. I believe you have a copy as well, your thoughts would be welcome.

K.D. covers songs from fellow Canadians Neil Y., Joni M. and Leonard C. - as well as a few others. Beautiful interpretations of great songs.
Well worth a listen IMHO.

Jim,
Yes, I am a bit concerned. It seems that things have gone downhill a bit since Gus went to Spurs and Bassett came in. I just hope we can get back to winning ways against Port Vale next week.

which seems to hint that there could be a quality difference between German and elsewhere pressing of ECM CD.
Maybe not...
Whatever, I have made all good experience with Caiman (and alike)

My initial impressions are that the mastering engineer has pushed the mid range forward to make it seem more detailed. It seems to have a lighter bass than the original. There is just something about the BBC Live gig sound I don't like but I just can't put my finger on why.
I have had another edition of this BBC show for years and maybe I am used to hearing that. So overall don't buy this one unless you want the BBC Live show. The original cd has a warmer sound IMHO and I think it is still the best version. Though the two tracks that came off the Memphis EP have never sounded better. Still can't understand why they didn't put the 3rd track from that ep on the disc. Baffling.
Yep I have the Rickie Lee target as well as a Japanese normal release copy of the same disc that has the same mastering. Lovely sound and better than the normal issue. I also have Pirates and Magazine as targets. Magazine can be got very cheap but Pirates can be hard to pick up.

Every time I convince myself to listen to one of Jarrett's albums, and I have a lot of them, I realize that I like him less and less.

La Traviata - Verdi
A rare excursion into opera for me - but no less beautiful for that.
