What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

K.D. covers songs from fellow Canadians Neil Y., Joni M. and Leonard C. - as well as a few others. Beautiful interpretations of great songs.
Well worth a listen IMHO.
Ian
Up there if not even better than Engenue IMO

Really? I normally avoid covers like the plague? Worth a punt?

Voltaire...hymns of the 49th Parallel is definitely worth a punt. K D has done an excellent job with these songs somehow preserving the spiirit of the original performances without trying to 'copy' them.quote:Really? I normally avoid covers like the plague? Worth a punt?

Great album (and DVD come to that!) Steve. We have had Bob Marley "Exodus" 30th Anniversary Edition on twice already. Arrived today. What a great album.

Geoff I watched her perform Hallelujiah on an ITV show shortly after it came out and to stay she put her life and soul into the vocal was an understatement and I don't like her music. She was so wrapped up in the song you could feel the words she was singing . She even got down on her knees at one point. I think it was one of the finest examples of female vocals I have ever had the priviledge to see. Simply stunning.

heard "Let's Dance" on the radio and this was the only place I had it.
The last 5 or so tracks really tell the story of a massive fall from grace but it was great to hear "fashion" again - wonderful guitar work on there.

I must confess I still like his early stuff the best - although I still think he made some fine records after Space Oddity, but his debut album remains my favourite with Little Bombarder, Rubber Band, London Boys, Sell Me A Coat and the Laughing Gnome - and yet hardly anybody seems to remember these great songs.

St. Germain - Tourist, late night chilling and sounding great.

And Who Shall Go to the Ball and What Shall Go to the Ball - Scott Walker - this makes The Drift sound easy listening - I'm not convinced by this effort, perhaps if I saw the visuals. Scott is nothing if not adventurous though and not one to make it easy on himself.

I was 2!
This album was described by one of his biographers as "the vinyl equivalent of the madwoman in the attic"
I've never really heard anything before Hunky Dorey, I must look it up sometime.

Hi SJB
click here for the Little Bombardier
The accompanying graphic has nothing to do with the song.
There are more appropriate clips for
Rubber Band
Sell Me A Coat
Love You Till Tuesday
London Boys
Should give you a good feel for Bowie in his pre-Space Oddity days.

Just like the most intimate conversations are usually between two people, I think that the highest levels of musical communications take place in a form of a duo.

Haim- Caiman only generally sell through Amazon. Click the used and new link on the Amazon page and you will usually see Caiman on the list of sellers if they have it in stock. If you want to go on to their own site it is www.caiman.com and from there you can access each countires individual sites. But when you want to buy something it will automatically put on on to Amazon.
You will sometimes find Caiman and a company called Importcds competing price wise. I have found them to be just as good as Amazon plus you can also buy direct from them at www.importcds.com.
ewemon,
Thanks for the helpful info.

Schubert Quintet in C [Hollywoood Quartet with Kurt Reher as guest cellist on Testament CD from an original Capitol tape for LP], Haydn Symphony No 85, "La Reine" [Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra on Nimbus. This is a fascinating band as well - memebers of the Vienna Philharmonic and Hungaraian State Opera Orchestras playing "ad hoc" at an annual summer festival and caught in the studio in Haydn's muci room at the Esterhaza Place in Hungary during preparation - fresh and open hearted, and completely un-self-conscious music making].
And Finally to reflect the full range, The Doors, "The Doors." Nothing need be added about this. I went to sleep, and am playing it again!
Not boredom, just tiredness ...
ATB from George
