What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

[quote]I have Van Morrison "Poetic Champions Compose" on vinyl as well and can fully recommend it. You don't really see it mentioned on here very often. Another fine album is "Beatiful Vision", in fact just about anything from Van is fantastic.

I can second that - "Poetic Champions" is my fave Van the Man album and one of my desert island discs. "Into the Music" is also highly recommended.

"La Radiolina" Manu Chou. Saw him on Later with Jools a couple of weeks back and thought he was bloody good. This album is magnificent.

I beg his pardon, that's Manu Chao.

Spooky coincidence - the last track on a compilation I've just been playing was 'Elevator operator'from another classic Clark album

Van Morrison.Poetic Champions Compose on vinyl.
I have had it on cd since about 1988.
It my fav Van album of all time.
And i have a few,But i have never heard this on vinyl before and all i can say is if you have a TT get it.
Because its a lot cheaper than trying to get the cd .
CDs of this album go for loads of money.
The thing is the cds are bloody good, but the black stuff has the edge and are a lot less money for a lot more music.
I would like to thank the man who is getting shot of all his vinyl for letting me have this master peace in A1 condition as new for £2.00 plus pp £1.50.
If you like Van Morrison and you have never heard this album, Try it.If you dont like Van Morrison try it.
If you like Fred Simon try it.
Its Freds piano with words and more.

Poetic Champions Compose is just about my all time favourite album also. I've had it on vinyl since it first came out, when was that? early 90's.

It was the album which started my love affair with Van's music and I have since bought most of his collection, about 70% on vinyl, the rest on CD.

I was introduced to this album at a Linn evening I got invited to. It was playing in the background as we all gathered a took out seats - me and my mate both went out and bought it the next day. That's what I love about music evenings, the chance to hear something you've not heard before.

Beethoven Symphonies Two in D and Four in B Flat. Klemperer with the Philharmonia.

The second as virile as you could imagine and the fourth as urbane as anything Beethoven wrote! Almost as good as Haydn!

Over the last week I have listened to the Six Paris Symphonies twice, Number 88 twice, and the run of the Clock [101], the 102 in B Falt and the Drum Roll [103], each three times, Beethoven was a phenomenon, but Haydn was even more imaginative at filling his own convention, the Symphony, with individual and life enhancing ideas!
