What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Can you extend, Haim ? Sounds interesting...

Myself:

Fabulous, a must-have.

Stefan,

Looks like half the Pushtan nation belongs to that orchestra...

It is just a different picture of MA's CALAMUS. Here is the cover picture:

I assume that you have this disc, otherwise, run and get one before the stores close down..

Haim

Mine's signed by Carl Palmer. He was on a Radio Orwell phone-in in about 1978, on which -in typical 14 year-old style - I gave him a hard time about not touring the UK for the last few years of ELP's 'first' lifespan.

And then there was a record signing at Parrot Records - as far as I could tell, I was the only one who turned up (tells you something about me, prog or the period ... or all three!). So much so that Parrot's proprietor didn't mind me lumping my complete ELP collection onto the counter (I had bought them all there in the first place!) though I only had the heart to ask CP to sign Welcome Back and Tarkus.

Happy Christmas,
James

Can't say I have ever heard much of Hans Thessink. Which are the best albums to start with. If you like him have you tried Doug Macleod especially his later discs?

Hi Ewemon - sorry for the late reply, I've been away for a couple of days.
I personally like the Southland album the best out of the 3 albums I have of his, perhaps because it was the first Theesink Lp that I bought, also perhaps because it has a great version of St James infirmary, which slips into an instrumental version of Greensleeves halfway through(!) and most definately because the recording quality is absolutely superb! It's a fairly stripped down acoustic affair, most of his other albums veer between Delta blues, cajun, and even Gospel. He reminds me of some of JJ Cales work although he definately adds his own accent to the music he plays. In answer to your question about Mcleod, yes there is a similarity to his later work ('come to home' in particular) when he stripped it back and lost the jazziness of his first albums (a bit too slick for my tastes)
Well worth checking out if you like any kind of blues and essential if you like listening in a dark room at night with a glass of whisky to keep you company!

Thanks for getting back to me. I had seen his discs crop up a couple of times when I was listening to amazon us samples but never paid much attention to him. So because of seeing one of his discs on your list I started to give him a proper listen. Ended up buying Southland and Crazy Moon (got that for £4)so would like to thank you for that. Have a Merry Xmas.
