What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

This evening starting with the mighty korstick
Then onto a soothing finish with J. Dowland
Haim, what do you think of the Paul Lewis Beethoven ? I got all three volumes from Caiman and have not really given them a good listen to yet. I do like the Hammerklavier interpretation. This is great music anyway.
Regards
Mark

For the last night of Christmas:
Handel's Messiah. Pinnock on Archiv.
For unto us is born a Child,
unto us a Son is given,
and the government shall be upon His shoulder's,
and His Name shall be called,
Wonderful, Counsellor,
The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father,
The Prince Of Peace!
[Isiah 9, 6]

Mark,
I hope that you had a good holiday in France.
I have only the second volume of Paul Lewis playing Beethoven's Sonatas and I really like it a lot. It is one of my two favorite albums of these works. My other choice is the great recrtding of Ivan Moravec on VAI which unfortunately is out of print. If you can find it get it:

I have been expecting to get your Dowland's Tears this week but apparently the order was lost on its way to the US from Germany, so in the meantime I will have to listen to Vol 1 which I have.
Regards,
Haim

Whether this really is the very best of Beethoven, is of course subject to personal view, but the 20 examples of his masterpeices on this nicely produced 2 cd album are a good reference starter for someone like me who really doesn't know very much about Beethoven or his musik.
Only had time to listern to cd 1 so far but the musik is a deep full blooded sound and very emotionaly stirring. I love Piano Sonata No.14 'Moonlight' and here with no hint of clankyness, just so close and very well played by (?) sleevenotes doesn't say who! but i had to push the coffee table out the way and make room for the 'grand' - it sounds that good! : )
My only criticism is the too-brief pause betweed tracks, i need longer to re-focus my mind to the next few minutes of greatness which are all so mood-different by nature of the album composition.
But Naxos have done a super job of engineering the sound and all the tracks are short examples taken from their own albums.
It was the NAXOS record label logo that persuaded me to put it in the shopping trolly in Tesco's and considering the 3 quid price tag... that's right, just three pounds! i would say it's a true value for money purchase and well recommended way to get better acquainted with Ludwig : )

We had a great time and hope also that you enjoyed the festive season. My wife's niece plays very well the piano and we had live music for 5 days. Of course lots of good company, food and wine as well.
I see Moravec discs on the Supraphon label are possibly available. I like very much the Beethoven violin sonatas with Suk and Panenka from Supraphon, which I was lucky enough to pick up a VG condition set on vinyl.
Just listened to CD 2 of another favourite of mine

and George, the Messiah with Pinnock is very good. I also like the J. E. Gardiner as well. What do you think of that ?

Mass in B Minor. The 5CD set also contains Bach's Lutheran masses, which I haven't heard. All for the princely sum of £11.

Hi to newcomer Lontano - the album you're named after is excellent indeed - one of Stanko's very best (and that's saying something). I'd be interested to hear a little more about the pictured album - looks intriguing.
