What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

I'm sort of with ightenhill on Mothership. It sounds wrong some how, I can't put my finger on what the wrongness might be though. Saying that the second disc is not so bad, maybe the CDP needs to warm up.
These SBLs do show up some strange things though, during a CSI episode there was a scene in a tiled room the sibilant echo on the speech was really off putting.

Alan,
One of the most exciting live bands I ever saw, back in the day, around the time that Runaway Boys was released as their first single.

Nic,
I saw that tour. Bristol Locarno/Studio was where I saw them. I agree with you completely about being a great live band. I've seen many others since and only a couple have come near, the place was jumping, the balcony was bouncing, and everyone was dancing. Brian Setzer is such a great guitarist. To think he was only about 18 when they made that album. That's a reunion I'd love to see !! Although I doubt if they'd leap around as much.

Sonny Rollins 'Way out West' LP
Contemporary Records. Recorded March 1957.
Oh my god! What a tight band. It sounds like you're next to the drum kit sometimes. Could have been recorded yesterday I kid you not
I only really woke up to Sonny Rollins after a
profile of him on Radio three in December:

For info on the sound engineer Roy DuNann on this album check out a profile of him on the stereophile website.

Listening this week to the Clash’s album, noting its attitude and sentiments, I was driven back to Third World War, and having played the old album a couple of times afresh I'm convinced that it is one of the most prophetic yet neglected items in all of British rock.
Richard Williams - Melody Maker 1977
He was right - but they never did quite get that load up stardom road - one of England's finest forgotten bands - click here for more info

I don't know much about Amp Fiddler, but I like what I heard on Later with Jools Holland a while ago.
One of the many cheap CDs I bought recently.
