What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

The first twelve Preludes and Fugues from Book One of the 48, which should keep me awake till it is time to get up and go to work... H Walcha on Ammer harpsichord, on EMI (available in France).

With bigotry and stupidity running amok on the streets of Dublin I just found myself singing Panic -hence I had to listen to it.

A loaner from a saxaphone-playing secretary at work. Some great double bass work by Peter Washington on this one.

Bach's Branddenburgische Konzerte 1-6 performed by Frans Bruggen, Sigiswald Kuijken, Gustav Leonhardt et al. played on original instruments - a couple of vinyl records in box that I've had for 25 years. I think it was originally recorded at the end of the 70s. I've not listened to it nearly enough. I'm sure there are better versions that I've never heard, but this sounds really good to me.

More power to your elbow! "Grace" was easily the best rock album of the 1990s, and (in my opinion) the best of all time.
I had the privilege of seeing Jeff Buckley live in concert on four occasions. I don't think that any other musical experience will come close. And I still have one of the plectrums that I stole from his mic stand at one of his London concerts.

Basil,
E.K.N.
Berlin Philharmonic Karajan on DG Privilege (vinyl) - bought as a student circa 1981 - no idea if it is a good 'un on not - sounds fine to me but as Fredrik is slowly helping me realise there are some special recordings around.

Idlewild - Everything But The Girl.
Have not listened to this for years, probably because it is a bit scratched, but it still stands up pretty well. Mellow mood.

This is an absolutely stunning disc - thoroughly recommended (as is their Handel Water and Firework music).
The Orpheus are one of the groups I'm most keen to see live.

p.s. Oh yes, currently listening to Daniel Harding and the Bremen Deutsche Khammerphilharmonie (there's a mouthful) playing Beethoven 7.
