What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

I really like it. It's country rock/pop but a bit melancholy and downbeat. Well crafted songs, well recorded and a good listen.

another recommendation for you then would be

I have listened my way through this, and asked myself constantly, when they stop tunign their instruments and start playing. Until it was finished...

Great fun, I think !

A Meeting by the River (hopefully not a frozen one).

Warm tubes sound for sub-zero temperatures.

Moody music

Yeah, baby. Three of my very faves (along with Days Of Future Passed, Children's, Question Of Balance and Seventh Sojourn.) Absolutely ravishing (if occasionally twee) pop music. My fave band, after the Beatles.

Agreed!'I.s.o.t.l.c' is an absolute classic as are most of their other early albums - Twee (or even Tweed, judging by some of the inner photos) at times, yes, but that kinda adds to their appeal. It always amazes me how so much of this music from this time crossed over influence wise - certain elements of 'lost chord' remind me an awful lot of 'S.F.Sorrow' by the Pretty Things. It also amazes me just how timeless this music is...

Thought I might as well keep going - what a great band the Moodies were.

von Zipper ... you mentioned SF Sorrow - surely one the greatest records ever ... shame the Pretty Things had only one really great album in them (they did do some other good stuff like Parachute and Electric Banana), where as the Moodies did a whole string of great albums

- yes bhazen - you're right of course, it can be a bit twee at times (especially the poems), but there is so much much good music - it just seems to hit the right notes.

Re: the Moodies - I actually agree, now I think about it; the (occasional) tweeness does add to the appeal. Ray Thomas' songs always make me smile, in particular.

A quality the Moody Blues possessed in abundance back then was complete sincerity: they really meant it. Which, living in an irony-saturated, cynical time like ours, is refreshing!

The Moodies have been well-served by nearly all the official CD issues over the years (the original '90 issues, the MFSLs, the recent Deluxe Edition Universals, etc.); only the '97 remasters have a few clunkers (IIRC, In Search and Question Of Balance are a bit on the bright side).

Hearing these on clean vinyl, played on (say) an LP-12 with all the trimmings, is transcendental.

Well, I had a CD of ambient electronica to hand, just in case it all got too much!

It's the first Cecil Taylor CD I've owned, but I will be buying more, so thanks for the recommendation.

Hi Steve,

I'm great thanks.

Yes the Eva album is a corker, I am just gutted for not listening to it when I bought it over a year ago, it is bloody superb.

I am currently waiting to buy SD aja on mfsl, I got the gaucho pressing and its very good.

Have you had any good purchases recently?

Steve,

I have the Chris Jones Roadhouses album which is yet another great album.

I will give all of those a try, this forum is great for discovering new music.

My last purchase along with a fab thunderbirds album was levon helm dirt falmer which is also good. Had to listen a few times though to really get into it.

Did you ever get the japanese Joshua Tree album btw?

Yes - I have that one too.

No. I did get a Japanese copy of "War" which is slightly better (less strident) than the Euro copy.
