What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Watch out Droo!

If you are entering Stefan's influence zone and music recommendations, prepare yourself to end up starving and broke, just like I did trying to follow his kind suggestions...

Now listening to The Montreal Tapes:

Hmmm, quoting myself now, but I just came across a lovely video of the duo performing the beautiful song "Brotherhood of Man", in what looks like their sitting room. It's on their MySpace page:

Innocence Mission

Can't recommend this band highly enough to all you fans of female singer-songwriters. Karen Peris is a goddess.

Hi Munch,

Plenty of sun here, on top of the minus fifteen degrees temperatures... The heat was not working on the train this morning and we kept dying at every station, when the doors opened.
Regards,
Haim

At leasrt the title has some heat:

Hi ewemon. I'm not familiar with their early work, but I have the last four "proper" studio albums, namely:

Glow
Birds of my Neighborhood
Befriended
We Walked in Song

IM Discography

Glow is the last album before they switched to a more pared down acoustic sound, so it may sound more like the stuff you know. Personally I prefer the later albums, especially "Birds of My Neighborhood", which was recorded after Karen Peris suffered a miscarriage, and is a moving document of despair and the gradual revival of hope. Befriended and We Walked in Song are great too.

If you'd like to try before you buy, there are some samples on their official site:

IM Samples

Of the tracks on offer, "Lakes of Canada" and "Brotherhood of Man" are probably the finest. I discovered IM when Sufjan Stevens named "Lakes of Canada" as one of his favourite songs.

MJQ magic through some extended resolution sound (xrcd from JVC).

One of the best jazz quartets, ever.

Milt Jackson, vibes
John Lewis, piano
Percy Heath, bass
Kenny Clarke, drums

Good night,
Haim

I threw caution to the winds or the fact I was bored last night might have something to do with it and bought Glow, Birds and the first disc again. Mind you I think I paid a total of £11.00 for all 3 discs helped.

imho... it's debatable whether this is really music, or if it's some kind of 'audible art form'. However, much of the more incidental bits can sound very attractive for a while... but all to often this degenerates into the chaos of nonsense that would do well hung in the Modern Tate... this 2 cd was a lend from a friend so perhaps i'll just hand it back to him and say, "Thank you for sharing this with me, it was a jolly interesting listerning experience"!...
Then i'll just curtsey, smile politely, and slowly walk away... quietly whistling to myself.

I am not really familiar at all with much post-war classical music, but there's a double CD of chamber music by Xenakis performed by the Arditti Quartet that I have. I think it's absolutely awesome. But I suspect you may have similar reservations!

Anyone got any other Xenakis recommendations?

Minus 15, We dont know what cold is here.
If it drops to minus 1 the trains dont work and the whole of England comes to a stand still.
Munch....I suspect Haim is talking minus 15 F rather than C! which means it is not just freezing cold it is artic F**king cold where he is Eek

Haim I am a JJ Johnson fan myself, matured listening to him avidly as pretty much the only jazz trombonist at the time with enough technique to play note runs as fast as a saxaphone raher than just 'waw-waw'.

Just popped this one on
