What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Again and again.
Is there somebody out there that can suggest me a better recording of this?
This sound a bit flat.

The album that started me off on quite a spree of Ace and Kent cds that got me into music I would never had otherwise.

The album that convinced me that the music didn't die in 1984.
Still sounding fantastic, hard to believe Mojo will be doing "20 years" ago articles on this in a year or 2!

Elgar - The Dream of Gerontius. Barbirolli/Halle (and Janet Baker).
Didn't know the work at all - so far I much preferred the Sea Pictures (with the LSO and also Baker) on the same set that I listened to last night.
Interestingly, for Baker fans, R3 are planning to do a Baker week:

Vaughan Williams Sinfonia Antartica - Boult/LPO. Excellent stuff this (though still not my favourite VM work), much better than Haitink. My only problem (as with much of VM's work) is that the first movement is stunning (as, indeed, is the third) but the rest doesn't quite live up to that promise. Thanks again Fredrik.
