What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Hi Haim,
At times JG's near-dissonance is wearing on me, but the drone-like compositions on this album have a rhythmic flow/meditative effect for me juxtaposed with the crystalline beauty of Rainer Bruninghaus' contributions on piano. The only JG I have are this and Twelve Moons.
The weather here, not unlike Illinois, is conducive to plenty of indoor listening time. Enjoy your Sunday.

Haim,
Some people are just used to whining sounds while they wake up in the morning. That's another story though and certainly not my experience

Unarum fidium which is played by the same group on ECM too is also a challenge to listen to over long periods (especially from 6 AM in the morning onwards). Not that I have tried. Simply not brave enough.
Currently having a break from work to listen to something cheerful and jolly

Cheers
Mark

It's one of those days i like to listen to the same song for hours.
Comfortably numb fits the case.
One of the best songs ever.

Mark,
The sax was used first and for a long time only in military parades. It is probably a perfect instrument for early morning reveille in army barracks, but since those days are so well behind me, I prefer something gentler for sunrise.
You have already proven your bravery by doing Shostakovitch in the morning. Your Soviet medal is on its way.
Regards,
Haim

Don't know what it is, but I can't get on with Garbarek.
The Jazz suites is sort of OK. I agree that the violin concerto was rather extreme though

Look forward to receiving the medal, although I hope you don't have to have a hairy chest to show it off though. Not really my style and in anycase, it's still a bit too cold for that.
BTW, I think the Biber is more challenging than the Unarum fidium one. I think all these discs are good ones though, it's just that you have to be in the mood for them.
Regards
Mark
