What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Don't know what it is, but I can't get on with Garbarek.

The Jazz suites is sort of OK. I agree that the violin concerto was rather extreme though Big Grin.

Look forward to receiving the medal, although I hope you don't have to have a hairy chest to show it off though. Not really my style and in anycase, it's still a bit too cold for that.

BTW, I think the Biber is more challenging than the Unarum fidium one. I think all these discs are good ones though, it's just that you have to be in the mood for them.

Regards
Mark

Mark,

That's what happens quite often when the composer, Biber in this case, is also a virtuoso. The music composed ends up being very challenging and sometimes almost impossible to be played as intended.

Here is a Garbarek that I can live with:

The reason I like it, in two words: Kim Kashkashian (on viola).

Comfortably numb again.

Adding to the Garbarek discussion (maybe one of the first 5 Jazz artists I had seen live, way back in the last century...): I find his playing squeaky, most of the times. Like him best in the Keith Jarrett Quartet, where he turns into (still squeaky, but also) a more expressionist performance. Also worth trying are his Haden/Garbarek/Gismonti CD's and his appearance on "Universal Syncopations". Ah, and "Madar" isn't bad, either...

Oh, well... Roll Eyes

Nice when playing CDs brings back good memories of "Being There" live. My Naim is great, but the Steinway in the Queen's Hall clearly has the edge.

Ian.

If you like this album, you might like the two previous albums. "The Ground" is my favourite.

Yes, all three of his albums are really good - hard to pick a favourite. I saw them twice in the last 18 months - excellent on both occasions.
