What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Hi ROTF

It's a small world isn't it, I thought there was something familiar with Jenna. We have taken holidays in the Croyde area (Georgeham) for the previous 3 summers. And who did we see @ the Georgeham & Croyde Summer Show - 20th Aug 2006, the lovely Jenna. Apart from her own songs she also sang a commendable wish you were here. In fact my daughter and I walked with Jenna and her mum back to her car. I suggested she look up the Porcupine Tree song Trains as it has crowd participating 'Hand Claps'. My daughter also remembered Jenna as having served her in a Woolacombe Surf Shop.

In the Summer Show Programme it commented that Jenna had appeared on tour with Steve Knightly (Show of Hands), Seth Lakeman & the Levellers.

Do I get a medal for listening to the Paganini all the way through and enjoying it

Mark, I have a funny CD I had bought in Cremona (...), where Accardo plays all the instruments on display with pieces from Paganini, Kreisler, Liszt, etc. Not a bad one, either. I would imagine him good with the Paganini.

No ?

Yasmin Levy - Romance & Yasmin

The rather lovely Yasmin Levy, who I saw in concert last night (with the wife and Diccus). One of the great things about the Sage is that you virtually always get to meet the artist afterwards, so more signed CD's.

A small world indeed Denis

Wish You Were Here is on Jenna's album and it sounds great. Did you see the sibilance thread in Hi-Fi Corner? I think ightenhill's['i] problem is solved, and he can enjoy Jenna's excellent CD once again. Steve Knightly produced and plays on the album. I like [i]Show of Hands too, but it did take me a few listens to their albums to catch on to why they were so popular, but it was worth the effort.

The Georgeham & Croyde Summer Show sounds a great place to visit.

Mark,

You sound medal hungry to me. With all your musical challenges you might end up looking like that:

Nic,

I think I mentioned it here before. I never had a chance to hear Yasmin Levy sing though I knew her growing up, going to school with her older brother. Her father, Isaac Levy, was a well known radio personality in Jerusalem whose singing was broadcasted every Saturday on the Israeli Radio.

I like very much how he plays his music. Other ones I like are with Yehudi Menuhin with the royal philharmonic orchestra under Alberto Erede and Michael Rabin with the Philharmonia Orchestra London under Sir Eugene Goosens.

The following is a fun listen as well.

Although if you want the lot (which I did not spot at time of buying the previous set), you could get

which is an absolute bargain from you know who Winker

Haim,

This reminds me of when my Son used to play football. Practically every weekend a medal. No more medals please we have draws full of the them Roll Eyes

Haim,

You lucky devil, she is gorgeous.

Yasmin's performance the other night was absolutely spellbinding. She even had the audience singing in a language they did not know.

The band were also excellent. The percussion was incredibly simple in terms of the instruments, or none i.e. hand clapping, but incredibly effective and wonderfully rhythmic.

The double bass was quite jazzy and subtle, and the guitar was beautifully played and fantastically effective as the solo accompaniment on some songs.

However for me the star was the older guy on ney flute, clarinet and zurna, who drove the music on wonderfully throughout.

Nic
