What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

It's still doesn't. Mary Chapin Carpenter,Mary Gautier, Lucinda Williams,Loreena MaKennitt have all grabbed me almost from the first track. I've listened to Tim's House 3 times now and all I can say is it's OK ish, better than Vashti, but not great.
Any way on vinyl ATM:-

EAST - Cold Chisel

They're calling time for exercise
Round her Majesty's hotel
The maid'll hose the room out
When I'm gone
I never knew such luxury
Before my verdict fell
Four walls, washbasin, prison bed

Well the Bathurst riots ended
When they clubbed the rebels down
And in every congregation
There was silence
You can hear the Angels singin'
When Christmas comes around
Four walls, washbasin, prison bed

I love to march while some Nazi calls the time
Who'd wanna go home

I can't see
I can't hear
They've burnt out all the feeling
I've never been so crazy
And it's just my second year
Four walls, washbasin, prison bed

Hi Discuss,

I only got this today on recommendation. Have to say its caught my ear from the first track. Layered Americana/ alt. country, sort of a slightly lusher Iron& wine, although the lead singers voice is one of those you'll love or hate. I think it's going to be a grower, give me a few more days with it and I'll give you a more in-depth verdict

Geoff,

I was playing the A.P pressing of the 'Chet' LP last night - it's one of my favourite late night jazz albums and that particular pressing has a beautiful sound- can't listen to my old CD version now as it sounds like it's mising something...

Haim, do you have this? Mark, judging by some earlier posts you might like this as well.

Huw,

Unfortunately I don't have it. I will see if I can get it here.

Tango: Zero Hour

Listened to it twice in the car creeping through heavy snow.

Very powerful music with chiseled pace contrasted by some slower and very delicate passages.

A perfect disc for the person who wants to evaluate his/her I/C cable, wether it is a Red Dawn, a Blue Heaven or just a Black Hell..

Huw & Stefan, to your attention.

Uiscedwr - CIRCLE

Anna Esslemont: Violin, vocals and harp
Kevin Dempsey: Guitar & Vocals
Cormac Byrne: Bodhran & Percussion

It took me a couple of plays to really get into it and enjoy... but the musicianship is very good and they play well together. Anna's singing voice is not strong and well formed but it's nice, and she uses it well in a non-pretentious kind of way (which makes a nice change these days) with plenty of instrumental parts and some fine singing from Kevin Dempsey too.
This Celtic-folky trio is quite worldy at times and explores interesting sounds from acoustic folk to rhythmic bellydance... this could be a cd made on the naim-audio label, the engineering quality is 10/10 perfect, this is a good lesson on how all cd's ought to be produced.
"Anna plays her Grandad's violin" ~ He must be very proud of her playing it so well : )

Roft, they have another cd called "Everywhere" @2004.
Have you got this also ?... What's it like ?
