What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Here it's Wolfert Brederode Quartet, who play "Currents"
Stefan
What do you make of that Stefan? After two listens, I'm a tad underwhelmed. A couple of tracks stood out, but the rest is a blur. Very pleasant, but not a great CD, is the verdict so far.
It's a grower - keep playing it. It has a beautiful atmosphere and put's me in a zone I like. Of the hundreds of disc I bought last year, this came close to the top for me.

DZ and Lontano,
My estimation of Brederode stands right between yours, guys. I cannot follow the raving reviews, but I also think it's a grower. Psychologically, more "hyped" bands (like anything with Paul Motian or newcomers like "The Simple Accoustic Trio", not to speak of Jarrett, Tord Gustavsen, etc.) make it easier to find them great right from the very first note they play, because they seem to be known, and you can draw parallels to other recordings. So, yes, give it a few more spins. I will, anyway.
cheers
Stefan

Stefan -
I would not give it a "raving review" but it was definitely a CD I liked a lot last year. It came out late in the year and got a of of plays and quickly worked it's way into my faves of the year.
Anyway, a new release from ECM - a very traditional classical CD - Haydn Symphonies 39 and 45

Ophélie Gaillard & Pulcinella + Sandrine Piau play Boccherini on a disc titled Madrid. Haim, definitely one for you (Rolf Lisveland on guitar). Nice DVD as well.

David Murray - Shakils II.
This is an outstanding CD and I particularly like the track "For Cynthia" with it's bluesy feel and Hammond Organ.

In a prog mood. Just played Steve Hillage - Fish Rising. First time through for me and quite enjoyed it.
Now up, the one and only Porcupine Tree, my favourite band of the moment.

Me too (courtesy of a friend), last night. If you get a chance to see her live do so she and her band are marvellous, aren't they Nic

Found myself playing the both discs last night again. It's a real grower, simple yet complex (I'll never get a job as a record reviewer). Think it will be a regular in the cdp.

She is playing the Sydney Opera House on March 1st. Think I might just pop along and take a look.

Thanks guys. I gave it another spin last night and it *is* growing on me. I will persevere.
Nick Bartsch is high on my wishlist, Lontano. How do you rate the new CD, compared with "Stoa" (assuming you have both)?

I heard it for the first time today and initial impression was very good and comparable to Stoa. I was not always concentrating as I was multitasking. Will give it another spin over the weekend and report back....I have read some good reviews as well

Droodzilla,
I have played it again but this time on my headphones in the dark. Very good indeed. I prefer it to Stoa so you have something to look forward to. Lots of good rhythms, minimalism, atmosphere etc. A good follow up. Shame it is not out in UK until 25th.
