What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

No problem Peter, we owe John (JN) one for that little gem.

Has "Smoke & Noise" turned up yet? I'm having a Ry Cooder day today.

Not yet it hasnt.

Yes I was listening to his 'Jazz' album over the weekend which whilst is different, I really do like it.

I should have quite a few albums arrive this week, Buddy Holly's master tape - I am really looking forward to listening to.

cheers

Bought this, along with the new Marcin Wasilewski Trio CD, today, as a post-dentist treat.

Very interesting music - somewhat more accessible than "The Zoo is Far", Wallumrod's last CD - but hardly easy listening!

Peter,

I'm a bit of a sucker for "The Dan", so I enjoyed Pretzel Logic. But my fav is Michael McDonald's version of the Jackie Wilson track, Lonely Teardrops.

My copy skips on my CDS3, so I might have to sort another - it works fine on other transports of course. Frown

Anyone who likes The Cure should get the version of this with the extra CD of rarities - there's some wonderful stuff - raw and immediate. Takes you back to 1979!!

Nigel,

What are the extras? It was their first and best album in my view. Saw them a number of times in the early days, up to and including the 17 Seconds tour, thought they went a bit commercial after that. Got a copy of Killing an Arab on Small Wonder 7 inch somewhere, which I am told is reasonably rare.

Marvellous album, my favourite Cure one two.

Nic

It's the Deluxe editio released in 2004. As well as the remastered original album it has:

I want to be old - studio demo - unreleased song
I'm cold - studio demo
Heroin Face - live in Crawley
I just need myself - unreleased song
10.15 Saturday Night - home demo
The Cocktail Party - unreleased song
Grinding Halt - home demo
Boy's Don't Cry - studio demo
It's not you - studio demo
10.15 Saturday Night - studio demo
Fire in Cairo - studio demo
Winter - studio outtake
Faded smiles - studio outtake
Play with me - studio outtake
(the above 4 are brilliant)
World War - actually crap, but I had it on my early copy of the Boys Don't Cry import
Jumping Someone Else's Train - early single and my favourite Cure Song - I played it all the time when I used to DJ at a pub on Anglesey while at university
Subway Song, Accuracy and 10.15 Saturday Night - all live in Nottingham 10/79.

Actually I'm amazed you asked - I've never seen a Cure album posted here. I'm inspired to put the Gang of Four up and see if anyone likes them!!

My favourite is Faith, followed by Seventeen Seconds, with TIB a close third. The deluxe version of 17secs has Carnage Visors, a soundtrack to a short animation that the band showed before coming on. It was given away as a caasette with early copies of the album. I remember I had a Carnage Visors tshirt that I bought at their gig in Manchester. Those were the days.
