What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Something In The Way She Moves, just to remind me of being young! Fredrik.

PS: Will EMI ever release the Beatles in a thoroughly modern decent transfer? I guess not , but it would be nice. Any one remember the Kinks, or even the Scaffold: Thank you very much for the Aintree Iron, for example?

Dear friends,

Who remebers 'Three Little Fishes' let alone, 'Three Wheels On My Wagon.'
This last please let me know who were the Artists.

Fredrik

PS: Sad puppy, as now doubt the Birlin Fritz would say!

Yes, more emotional than sensible, but would you not be also, if... Fred

This is the Charles Lloyd I remember from the 60's. This is a great reissue and features Jarrett, DeJohnette and Ron McClure. The timing is great sinceWolfgang's Vault features many of these recordings from Fillmore by Bill Graham

Dear Fredrik

Three Wheels On My Wagon had lyrics by Bob Hilliard and was set to music by Burt Bacharach. The version that reached the hit parade was by The New Christy Minstrels.

I'm less sure about Three Little Fishes and remember Frankie Howard doing a version, but I think the original is from around 1939 and performed by Kay Kyser (The Ol' Professor of SWing) on his show Kay Kysers Kollege of Musical Knowledge. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong with this.

Best regards, Rotf

Dear Fredrick

The Kinks are one of my favourite groups and I have most of their albums up to Sleepwalker. My favourite Kinks albums are The Kinks Are The Village Green Prevesrvation Society, Arthur the Decline and Fall and the British Empire and Lola vs The Powerman on the Moneygoround Part One.

To my knowlege there was no pert two of Lola vs The Powerman on the Moneygoround.

Most Kinks recordings sound a bit muffled on CD, but that is because most of the original vinyl was also muffled. Shangrila from Arthur is distorted on both my vinyl copies (Arthur elpee and single) and on the remastered CD - still it's a great song and that comes through.

And yes I do rememember the Scaffold's Thank You Very Much as well as Lily The Pink, but I don't have any Scaffold records records (which is a shame).

Best regards, Rotf

Fredrik

I made a plea (earlier on this thread, I think) for the Beatles albums to be remastered BUT WITH relevant singles sensibly added. Who wouldn't want a decent remastering of Sergeant Pepper, say, with Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever added (I'd suggest between the original LP side break)?

I was given a "pirate" CD a couple of years back of Sergeant Pepper without EQ compression and it's staggeringly better than what EMI have out there at present.

Is it just a case of EMI not wanting to have to pay yet more royalties to that freak Michael Jackson or whoever owns the copyright these days?

"Running to stand still" has some emotional punch and the oft overlooked gem "exit" on side 2 is really rocking this morning.

On best group thread there was the comment that U2 did not have 2 good albums in their cannon.

I'd hold up this and particularily Achtung Baby as a very strong rebuttal to this.

EW - indeed a very good set.

Personally I'm in Bayreuth, again Roll Eyes. This time with Krauss for Siegfried.

Earlier it was Britten's Gloriana with Mackerras and the forces of WNO.
