What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Marie Lloyd, Harry champion, Lilly Langtree, George Formby, Florrie Ford et al - a bit scratchy, but loads of good songs across 4 CDs.

Best of Joe Walsh and The James Gang.
Ewen, I am going ot have to ask you, what are the best pressings for Joe Walsh stuff?
Oh and btw, have you got the RLJ anthology, it sounds excellent to my ears, I'd be suprised if anything can better it...
P
Just buy a normal copy of "Smoker" preferably with the no MCLD 19020. There isn't any better and it costs just a couple of pounds.
There is also a twofer disc from Canada "Smoker/Sick Mind" that sounds good. Cat no MCAD 5869
"Barnstorm", it's a toss up between the MFSL and the orignal Jap copy on MCA. Don't buy a copy of the disc on Hip-O as it was badly mastered. I have the MFSL which I am very happy with.
"So What" the best version is the original Jap cat no WMC5-288 it is so smooth sounding compared to the normal pressing which is a reach for the cotton wool job. I find it very dynamic but I haven't seen many up for sale.
I agree with you on the RLJ Anthology excellent sounding.
The James Gang stuff I am not sure about so can't answer that but some folk say the original Jap pressings which are WMC5 cat no's
The only James Gang disc I have is the MFSL Live disc and there is a debate about whats the best. Personally I think it is the best but some folk think it is not any better than the normal One Way cheap pressing.
Hope you are still playing that U2- good isn't it.
Ewen,
Thanks for your reply, as usual - very interesting.
I played the U2 earlier, I love it, its brought me much closer to the music on the disc which is priceless isn't it.
I will have a dig around for the Joe Walsh ones you mention.
RE RLJ, I don't think I wish to persue any longer for the targets, I cant imagine them being better than the anthology! - Only thing that would tempt me is that if they are as good, I do prefer albums as you get used to the track order.
Next disc i'd like is the Nightfly, there is the 24k (43XD-2003) on ebay but according to the SH forums it sounds no different to the normal pressing. I read on a guys website that two targets exist, the latter being the desired one as there were flaws on the original pressing.
The Doors LA Woman is one of my all time fav albums, I might go for the DCC pressing. I am yet to see LA Woman on target. So this is another one i'd like!
Thanks again.

No probs re the RLJ's. The Fagen disc never heard the gold disc so couldn't give you an answer there.
Also never heard the DCC Doors discs. Think one of the other members may have. Never have been a huge fan of theirs so all I have of them is the new remasters which to be honest many Doors fans hate.

Funny enough I saw one Doors LA Woman target tonight on the other site going for a meager $30 + postage but unless you read this fast it won't be there in about 30 mins.

In the seventies you could have been listening to the Bay City rollers or The Osmonds but I bloody well wouldn't have been I'd be spacing out to the superior sounds of....

Continuing with this gem .... the surface noise is annoying, but the songs shine through ... I can't help feeling it would sound even better with some processing to remove the crackles and pops.

Chillkram - I think this is the sleeve for the US market, for whom the bare bosoms of the original sleeve (UK) were considered too racy...
