What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

In the car tonight:
Hamza el-Din / Escalay (The Water Wheel) / Nonesuch
Hamza el-Din came from Nubia to Cairo to study chemical engineering, and ended up also playing and studying the oud at the Conservatory of Music in Cairo. In his playing he combines Arabic tunes with traditional Nubian music.
The water Wheel piece which is over 21 minutes long is the most exceptional oud music I ever heard.

Another record I bought years ago and I've no idea why - I'm not sure if I like it, perhaps if I understood the text then I might - it remains interesting.

Welcome back to the real world, Stefan.
The cover of this ECM really reminds me a lot of Las Vegas.

Eighth Black Bird / Thirteen Ways / Cedille
The name is derived from Wallace Steven's poem "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird".
They are ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago who met and joined together at another college in 1996 while aquiring bachelor's degrees in preformance.
The group's musicians play wonderful contemporary music using flutes, clarinets, cello, piano and percussion.
I saw them last year in Lake Forest College.
