What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Genesis '. . . And Then There Were Three . . .' [Atlantic, 1978]
The departure of Peter Gabriel having long since left them a quartet, what might this title indicate? Ask ex-fan Jon Pareles: "Without lead guitarist Steve Hackett, the band loses its last remaining focal point; the rest is double-tracking. Hence a sound as mushy as the dread Moody Blues, with fewer excuses." D+

There is no way I could sit and listen to a soul album unless it was Aretha Franklin. I really couldn't listen to one of those Motown groups and enjoy it, I just co.... oh I give up. this is a fine record and Papa Was A Rolling Stone is brilliant. Were all their records this good?

Yes, but different. The early stuff emphasized harmony and romance. When Norman Whitfield took over from Smokey, the music become more edgy, reflecting the times. Albums that give a sample of each era of the Temptations: Sing Smokey, In a Mellow mood, Cloud Nine ,puzzle People, To Be Continued. Each one shows a side of my favorite male group from my youth.

Rather rowdy for ECM, but still great.

I listened to some excerpts on the radio, and thought it was "lovely". Would be interested to hear more opinions, before I purchase...

Incidently, I have bought this one (blind), today, but not listened to it, yet. Still with Trio Mediaeval, now...

quote:Whats wrong with Marvin Gaye. Whats Going On is a great album?
Not really my cup of Horlicks, I'm afraid. It was probably hearing I heard It Through The Grapevine too many times in my youth that put me off Mr Gaye (I detest that song almost as much as River Deep Mountain High - Deep Purple version excepted). In fairness I've only heard What's Going On a couple of times many years ago and it didn't really grab me, I can't remember much about it. There's not much I've heard on Motown that I really liked, but the Temptations seem to be a notable exception; I also like the Smokey Robinson tracks I've heard. It is probably because I fail to relate to the songs in the same way as I do to songs like Bad Review with lines like I know what you look like so don't ever come near Stroud, which immediately conjures a picture in my mind.
So to answer your question - there's absolutely nothing wrong with What's Going On - it's just me.
I'm going to try some of Anthony's recommendations (Thanks Anthony much appreciated)
