What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

After that, probably Julia Fischer - I'd like to hear what all the fuss is about.

Unspectecular - that is what I'd call Julia Fischer's interpretation. Nevertheless you hear that she "grew up" with the partitas. I like her playing them a lot.

Stefan, as usual you nail it dead on. But I would add the clarification that "unspectacular," in my view, can also be interpreted as a "positive" or a good thing. It's true, Julia Fischer's recording is very intimate, reflective and melancholy; its sound is less rhythmic or showy and aims toward beauty or contemplation. Whereas Grumiaux is more the extrovert, Fischer is the introvert. Fischer is more about taking the time to go on a long walk in the forest, by yourself or as I did the other day, watch big, wet snowflakes slowly fall and make everything white again. Sometimes, it makes a nice contrast to the other alternatives but don't choose this one when you are chasing about or motoring down the autobahn at 200km/hr.

Stefan, having said that, I will be providing my mailing address to you under a separate e-mail so that you can send me your signed copy from Julia as soon as possible; don't delay! Big Grin

Yes, I read "unspectacular" as a positive too, and assumed that's how Stefan meant it. Florestan, your description of the Fischer disc makes me want to hear it very much - curse you!

Droo,

I have the Kremer disc but I clearly prefer Holloway with his more direct and emotional approach.
I think that his playing is superb. Did you have a chance to hear him?

Regards,
Haim

Hi Haim, I hadn't considered Holloway's recording, but I will try to find some samples online, now that you mention it. I homed in on Kremer because the reviews I read led me to believe it would make an interesting contrast to Grumiaux and Podger.

I suppose I should save some money to buy CDs that have nothing to do with Bach (or, indeed, to buy food)!

Nigel, glad I could help! And being in a helpful mood right now I thought I should also point out that Julia Fischer has probably 7 other releases out on the Pentatone label right now. Eek So it's a slippery slope....

All of them sound superb to me. I should say though that these are SACD's and my only problem is that my Naim player doesn't always get along with SACD. Pentatone skips once in a while but Hyperion SACD's skip more frequently.
